How to Buy Furniture From China: Costs, MOQ, Payment, QC and Shipping

Buying furniture from China pays off once the order reaches roughly USD 8,000–10,000 ex-works, about 15 m³ of goods — the point where export packing, documents and port fees stop dominating the total. From there the rule set is short: pay 30% on order and 70% only after an inspection you have seen in photos and video; expect 30–60 days of production and 2–7 weeks at sea; and treat the landed price as 1.4–1.9 times the factory price for a full container. This page walks the ten steps with the numbers Source Foshan uses on client orders every week.

Five numbers to memorise before the first quotation.

  • 011.4–1.9×the ex-works price is what a full container lands at, after freight, duty, port fees and delivery. Small LCL shipments: 2–3×.

  • 0330–60 daysof production for most items; custom cabinetry and stone run 8–10 weeks. Ocean transit adds 14–18 days to the US West Coast, 28–45 to Europe or the US East Coast.
  • 0476 m³usable in a 40 ft high-cube (2,690 cu ft) — often a full 3–4 bedroom home, or 60–120 dining chairs plus tables and case goods. Furniture runs out of space long before weight.

01 · Is it worth it for me?

Is buying furniture from China worth it for a home or small business?

Usually yes from about USD 8,000–10,000 ex-works or 15 m³, because fixed costs stop dominating. Below that, savings shrink fast; a single sofa shipped alone rarely beats a local sale price. Custom and made-to-order pieces show the biggest gap — Foshan suppliers typically quote 30–60% below comparable Western retail for the same materials — while flat-pack and basic office chairs show almost none. Pick the size of your order.

Interactive · order size

My order is roughly…

Three things decide the outcome: how full the container is, how bulky-but-light the mix is, and the duty regime at your destination.

One sofa or one room

  • VerdictRarely worth it on price. LCL freight runs USD 60–120 per m³, fixed charges for documents, port handling and customs entry add USD 400–800 on their own, and duty applies regardless of size. Do it for a piece you cannot get at home, not to save money.
  • Landed multiple2–3× ex-works
  • Ships asLCL, +5–10 days for consolidation and deconsolidation
  • Where savings surviveA custom piece, stone or solid timber — the 30–60% gap absorbs the fixed costs

02 · The process

What are the steps from brief to delivery?

Ten stages, 14–20 weeks from a finished brief to furniture in the room. The order is fixed; the timings depend on how much is custom-made. Steps 7 and 8 are where your money is protected — never let a supplier ship first and inspect later. Tap a card for the detail.

  1. 01BriefEvery item with dimensions, materials, reference images, quantity and a target price, grouped by room or store.

List every item with dimensions, materials, reference images, quantity and a target price. Group items by room or by store. A priced list with dimensions and reference photos is the brief every supplier needs before quoting.

Compare two or three quotes per item from showrooms, factories or a local sourcing team. Check the business licence and ask who actually makes the piece; verifying a Chinese furniture manufacturer is a step of its own.

03 · What does it really cost?

What does furniture from China really cost once it lands?

About 1.4–1.9 times the ex-works price for a full or near-full container, 2–3 times for small LCL shipments. The stack is a typical mixed household order to the US or Europe; shares are indicative percentages of the ex-works value.

A wooden dining set entering the EU may pay 0% duty plus VAT; the same set entering the US in 2026 carries a 25% Section 301 tariff and possibly more. The 6-digit HS code drives every rate — see the furniture HS code guide and have your broker confirm the national tariff line before you order.

Freight rates move

Ocean freight is quoted per shipment and rises sharply in peak season (August–October) and before Chinese New Year. Ask for a rate valid at your expected shipping date, not at quotation; a worked 2026 example is in the wholesale guide.

04

What MOQs and payment terms should you expect?

The minimum depends on the supplier type more than on the product: most Foshan showrooms will sell one piece, most factories want 20–50 per model, export OEM plants often want a container.

Showroom brands · Lecong, LongjiangOne piece from stock

Custom sizes or fabrics usually from 2–5 pieces with a 10–30% surcharge. Ticket prices leave room for a 20–50% trade quote.

Best for homeowners, designers, boutique hotels who want to sit on it first.
Domestic-market factories10–30 pieces per model

In standard finishes; many accept mixed orders across models if the total reaches USD 5,000–15,000.

Best for a whole home mixing rooms across one maker's range.
Export OEM factories · Houjie, Longjiang50–200 per model, or a container

Built to Western brand standards because that is their business; slow on small orders.

Best for retailers, importers and project buyers.
Specialist workshops · stone, rattan, metalQuoted per project

The minimum is set by set-up time rather than by pieces; below it, a small-quantity surcharge of 15–40%.

Best for one-off custom pieces inside a larger order.

Payment terms that protect youFive rules, no exceptions.

  1. 30% deposit, 70% after inspection and before loadingSome suppliers accept 30/60/10 with the last 10% after arrival. Never 100% upfront, whatever the discount.
  2. Bank transfer to the registered company accountThe account name must match the business licence and the invoice. Never a personal account.
  3. Confirm bank details by phone or video before each paymentInvoice-swap fraud by email — a "new account" notice — is the most common loss for first-time importers.
  4. Write the failure clause into the PIIf inspection fails: rework at the supplier's cost, and the balance is not due until re-inspection passes.
  5. Letters of credit only above roughly USD 100,000Below that, bank fees outweigh the protection; the 30/70 split with inspection does the job.

05

Which Incoterm and shipping option should you choose?

Ask for FOB prices as your default: easy to compare between suppliers, and you keep control of the freight. EXW works when a sourcing team or forwarder consolidates several suppliers for you; CIF and DDP shift work to the seller but hide the true cost of freight and duties. Whatever the term, insist on a named port and a written packing standard — "FOB China" is not a place.

Container or LCL? Choose by volume, not weight

LCLbelow ≈ 12–15 m³

One sofa set up to a small apartment. Adds 5–10 days for consolidation; more handling, more damage risk; per-m³ cost 2–3× the FCL equivalent.

20 ft standard15–28 m³

A 1–2 bedroom apartment, or a 30–40 seat restaurant. Good for heavy stone and solid wood.

40 ft high-cubefrom ≈ 30 m³

Often a full 3–4 bedroom home, or 60–120 dining chairs plus tables and case goods. The standard choice for whole-home orders — 54 items from 9 suppliers fitted one on our Greater Bay Area residence.

06

How long does it take from order to delivery?

Plan 3–5 months in total: 30–60 days of production, one to two weeks for inspection and export, then two to seven weeks on the water. Add three to seven days at each end for customs and trucking, and two dead periods in the Chinese calendar.

Australia · Sydney, MelbourneDirect from Shenzhen; check quarantine rules for timber12–20 days
US West Coast · Los Angeles, Long Beach+5–10 days for LCL consolidation and deconsolidation14–18 days
Middle East · Dubai, Jebel AliDirect services; Gulf wood-packaging rules apply15–25 days
Northern Europe · Rotterdam, Hamburg, FelixstoweCape of Good Hope routings add 10–14 days when Red Sea services are diverted28–35 days
US East Coast · New York, SavannahMostly via the Panama Canal30–45 days
Two dead periods

Chinese New Year closes factories for two to four weeks (the 2027 holiday falls on 6 February) and the National Day holiday takes the first week of October. Orders confirmed in late December rarely ship before March.

Where the weeks go

Upholstery takes 4–6 weeks of the production timeline, and late fabric delivery — not sewing — is the usual delay. Custom cabinetry and stone push production to 8–10 weeks; start those lines first.

07

Which documents and compliance rules apply to furniture imports?

Every shipment needs a commercial invoice, a packing list and a bill of lading; most also need a certificate of origin, and anything on wooden pallets or in crates needs proof of ISPM-15 treatment. On top of those, the US and the UK have product rules that must be met while the goods are being made, not after they arrive. Compliance paperwork cannot be created after the fact: make it a condition of the PI.

Ask the supplier for TSCA, fire-test and timber-species documents at quotation. Your customs broker or local authority has the final word on what applies to your goods.

What mistakes do first-time importers make most often?

02Ordering from photos

04Paying a "new" bank account

From an emailed invoice change, without a phone check. The most common loss for first-time importers.

05Under-estimating volume

A sofa carton is 30–40% larger than the sofa; a container fills faster than the spreadsheet says.

06Ignoring the import side

No broker, no bond, no Lacey or TSCA paperwork — and a container accruing storage at the port.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about buying furniture from China

Can I buy just one sofa from China?

Yes, but it rarely saves money. A single sofa ships LCL at USD 60–120 per m³ plus fixed charges for documents, port handling and customs entry that can add USD 400–800 on their own, and duties apply regardless of size. Savings become real from about USD 8,000–10,000 of goods or 15 m³, roughly a living room plus a bedroom, and are strongest for custom or made-to-order pieces.

How much cheaper is furniture from China than buying locally?

For comparable materials, custom and mid-to-high-end pieces from Foshan typically come in 30–60% below Western retail at the factory or showroom, before freight and duty. After landing, the saving is usually 20–45% on a well-filled container. Commodity items that Western chains already import in bulk, such as flat-pack storage and basic task chairs, often show little or no saving once shipping is added.

How do I pay a Chinese furniture supplier safely?

Pay by bank transfer to the supplier’s registered company account, never a personal one, and check that the account name matches the business licence and invoice. Split payment 30% deposit and 70% after you approve the pre-shipment inspection report. Confirm bank details by phone or video before each transfer, because emailed “new account” notices are the most common fraud. Above roughly USD 100,000, a letter of credit is worth the bank fees.

Do I need a customs broker to import furniture?

In practice, yes. In the US, EU, UK and Australia the importer of record is legally responsible for the declared classification and value, and a licensed broker files the entry, arranges the bond or deferment account, pays duties and handles inspections. Broker fees for a single container are typically USD 150–400 plus disbursements. Appoint the broker before the vessel sails so the entry can be pre-filed and storage charges avoided.

What happens if furniture arrives damaged?

Marine insurance covers transit damage if you insured the cargo, usually at 110% of the CIF value; claims need photos taken before unpacking and a survey for large losses. Damage caused by poor packing is the supplier’s responsibility only if the packing standard was written into the pro-forma invoice. Defects that existed before shipment should have been caught at inspection, which is why the balance is paid after the report, not before.

Can I mix furniture from several suppliers in one container?

Yes, and it is the normal way to furnish a home or a small store. Each supplier delivers ex-works to one consolidation warehouse, where goods are checked, repacked if needed, labelled by room and loaded to a plan. Consolidation typically costs USD 15–30 per m³ plus a fixed fee for the load plan and documents. One commercial invoice and one packing list cover all suppliers, with the consolidator or exporter as shipper of record.

Is furniture from China good quality?

Quality tracks the tier you buy at and the spec you write. Export OEM factories in Dongguan and Longjiang build to Western brand standards because that is their business; domestic-market factories vary by frame timber, foam density and hardware; small workshops depend on the individual craftsman. The controls that matter are a written spec (materials, densities, finishes), a first-article check for custom pieces and an item-by-item pre-shipment inspection before payment.

How long does it take to get furniture from China?

Plan 3–5 months door to door: 30–60 days of production (8–10 weeks for cabinetry and stone), one to two weeks for inspection, packing and export, 14–18 days at sea to the US West Coast or 28–45 days to Europe and the US East Coast, then three to seven days for customs and trucking. Avoid confirming orders in late December: Chinese New Year closes factories for two to four weeks.
