China Furniture: How the Industry Works and How Overseas Buyers Source From It

China makes about a third of the world's furniture, and roughly a third of that comes from one city: Foshan, in Guangdong, where Source Foshan is based. For an overseas buyer the practical question is not "is Chinese furniture good?" — the same town builds USD 300 sofas and USD 3,000 sofas — but which of the four kinds of seller you are talking to, what the written specification says, and what the factory price becomes by the time it reaches your door. This page answers those three things with the numbers we use every week.

At a glance

Five numbers that describe China furniture in 2026.

  • 0134%of world furniture production is Chinese — about USD 160 bn in 2023 (CSIL). Over 30% of global exports.
  • 0235%of China's furniture is estimated to come from Foshan alone; Lecong runs the world's largest furniture trading district.
  • 0310×price spread for a "three-seat sofa" from one Foshan town. Frame timber, foam density, cover grade and inspection decide it, not the country.
  • 0455–80%of what you finally pay is the factory (EXW) price; packing, freight, duty and delivery are the rest. Volume and duty move it most.
  • 05¥60kfine for a Lecong livestream seller whose "top-grain leather" sofas were part PU — eight cases this year. The trade has rats; the regulator has receipts.

01

Where is furniture made in China, and which cluster should you actually go to?

Around two-thirds of export-grade furniture comes from a few dozen specialised towns. For most overseas orders the choice narrows to Guangdong — Foshan for range and year-round showrooms, Dongguan for export factories used to Western specs. Only a single-category volume order (5,000 office chairs, a container of cast-aluminium garden sets) justifies adding a second province to the trip.

Foshan (Shunde: Lecong malls and Longjiang factories; Nanhai metal and lighting; Chancheng tiles): upholstery, dining, beds, hotel FF&E, panel and solid wood, tiles and sanitaryware — the widest range and year-round showrooms; est. 35% of national output. Dongguan (Houjie, Dalingshan): export OEM/ODM for global brands, used to Western specs and audits. Huizhou: motion and recliner sofas, close to half of China's motion-sofa exports. Guangzhou: whole-house cabinetry and the CIFF fair.

02 · Can I trust what I'm told?

Who actually sells Chinese furniture — and why the business card lies.

Four kinds of seller offer overseas buyers the same goods at different prices. The single most common misunderstanding is a trading company presenting itself as a factory; the second is a lavish "factory showroom" that is a dealer paying some of the highest rents in China. Neither is illegal. Both change what you pay.

Export factory · OEM/ODMLowest unit price, needs volume

EXW or FOB; 20–100 pieces per model, a container preferred. Slow on small orders; English and design support vary. Best for retailers, importers and large projects.

Watch for: "factory" websites that film someone else's floor. Ask for the licence and the address, then go.
Trading companyFactory price plus 10–30%

Sells access, convenience and mixed orders; low MOQ. Useful for buyers without local staff who need one invoice for many items.

Watch for: limited control over production and a name on the invoice that is not the maker's. Pay only the licensed entity.
Showroom brand · domesticStock with no minimum

A domestic maker (or dealer) with finished pieces in a Lecong or Longjiang showroom, selling from stock or short runs at 20–50% under the ticket for trade and project buyers.

Watch for: mall rent in the price, export packing that is nobody's routine, and showroom lighting. Sit five minutes; flip it over.
Independent sourcing teamSupplier price plus a stated fee

Works for you, not the seller; combines the other three; follows the supplier's MOQ. Best for whole-home and multi-supplier projects and first-time importers.

Watch for: undisclosed commission. Ask whether the fee is stated and whether payments go to company accounts. Ours is, and they do.
The regulator agrees the problem is real

In November 2025 the Foshan Furniture Association publicly asked consumers for evidence against firms "eating from Foshan's bowl while smashing it". In August 2026 Lecong's market-supervision bureau fined a livestream seller ¥60,000 for "top-grain leather" sofas that were part PU and "13 cm high-resilience foam" mixed with ordinary foam — one of eight cases this year. The city has issued a compliance handbook just for furniture livestreaming. Details and the six checks in our translation of a dealer's three days in Foshan.

03 · Do you understand my case?

04 · Is it worth a conversation?

How does a factory price become the price at your door?

Chinese suppliers quote EXW (at the factory gate) or FOB (on the ship, export-cleared). Everything after that is your cost. The stack below is a USD 10,000 mixed residential order, about 15 m³ shipped LCL, at indicative 2026 rates — read it as a structure, not a quote.

Product, EXW FoshanSofa, dining set, two beds, side tables — the only line the factory quotesUSD 10,000
Export packing & cratingFoam, corner protection, crates for stone and glass; underpacking is the main cause of transit damageUSD 300–600
Inland trucking to portFoshan is 1–2 hours from Shenzhen and NanshaUSD 100–250
Ocean freight, LCLUSD 50–100 per m³ indicative; a full container halves the rate per m³USD 750–1,500
InsuranceUsually 110% of CIF valueUSD 30–50
Destination port & handlingLCL deconsolidation, documents, terminal feesUSD 300–800
Import duty & taxesUS: Section 301 adds 25% on most Chinese furniture plus other layers; EU, UK, AU: lower duty plus VAT/GST. Confirm the tariff line firstUSD varies
Last-mile deliveryKerbside versus in-room delivery and assemblyUSD 200–800
Landed, before dutyEXW is 71–85% of the landed price before dutyUSD 11,700–14,000
Two things move the stack most

Volume: a 40 ft HQ container (≈ 76 m³) cuts ocean freight per m³ by about half versus LCL, which is why importers consolidate several suppliers into one box. Duty: US importers face Section 301 tariffs of 25% on most Chinese-origin furniture on top of the base rate, with additional layers changing several times since 2025; European, UK and Australian rates are far lower but VAT or GST applies to the landed value. Duty is estimated by HS code before you decide — see the furniture HS code guide.

Payment and MOQ, in one breath

30% deposit on order, 70% after the inspection report and before loading, to a registered company account. Factory minimums of 20–50 pieces per model are normal and almost anything is customisable within them; below MOQ, buy showroom stock, standardise across rooms, share a run, or accept a 15–40% surcharge. Samples cost USD 100–400 and 2–3 weeks and are usually credited against the order. Step by step in how to buy furniture from China.

05

Visit, source remotely, or go to a fair — which of the three routes fits you?

Most successful buyers combine two of the three. A visit remains the highest-confidence route for homes and hotels because Foshan's malls hold finished product in every category all year; fairs are strongest for volume and export-factory discovery; remote works once you have a specification sheet.

What is worth buying from China through us — and what we don't do.

The honest version of "we can source anything".

Worth the trip or the container
  • Custom and mid-to-high-end pieces: landed 30–60% below comparable Western retail for the same materials
  • Whole homes and hospitality packages that fill a container from 6–12 suppliers
  • Upholstery, solid timber and veneer casegoods, stone and sintered-stone tops, metal frames, lighting, rugs, tiles and sanitaryware — all within an hour of our office
  • Made-to-order in your fabric, size and finish, with a drawing, a sample and an inspection report
What we don't do
  • We are not a manufacturer, a marketplace or a catalogue; we do not hold stock and we sell nothing of our own
  • We take no commission from suppliers — the fee on your quotation is our only income
  • We do not quote without a written specification, and we do not ship anything we have not inspected
  • We do not accept "pay in full for a discount"; 30% deposit and 70% after inspection, to company accounts
  • Cheap flat-pack for resale is rarely worth it from here: local retailers already import it at scale

Honestly, I expected a tour guide and got a project manager. Grace walked us through Lecong in two days, kept every quote in one spreadsheet, and the container turned up with nothing broken. We'd budgeted for a few disasters. There weren't any.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about China furniture

Is furniture from China good quality?

It can be, and it can be poor; the country of origin does not decide it. Chinese factories produce for IKEA, for five-star hotel chains and for USD 99 online sofas from the same towns. Quality follows the specification you write, the supplier tier you choose and the inspection you insist on. Buyers who define frame timber, foam density, fabric abrasion and hardware, approve a first article and inspect before paying the balance get consistent results.

How much cheaper is furniture from China than buying locally?

For custom or mid-to-high-end pieces, landed prices typically come in 30–60% below comparable Western retail for the same materials, depending on volume, route and destination duty. The saving shrinks on small LCL shipments and in the US, where Section 301 tariffs add 25% or more. For cheap flat-pack items the saving is often not worth the effort, because local retailers already import those at scale.

Can a private homeowner buy directly from a Chinese factory?

Yes, but factories prefer volume, so a single home order usually mixes showroom stock, short factory runs and a few custom pieces from workshops. The efficient way is to fill one shipment from several suppliers, consolidated in one warehouse. A whole 3–4 bedroom home often fits a 40 ft HQ container; smaller orders ship LCL by the cubic metre. A local sourcing team handles the coordination that a factory will not do for one household.

How do I tell a real Foshan factory from a trading company or a dealer showroom?

Ask whether it is factory-direct or a distributor, then ask to see the production floor and warehouse: a maker can show your model’s frames, cutting and stock; a dealer can only show the showroom. Read the business licence: a Foshan manufacturer is registered as 佛山市 … 家具有限公司 with a factory address, and the name on the invoice must match it. Pay only that entity.

How long does it take from order to delivery?

Plan 3–5 months door to door. Production typically takes 30–60 days after deposit and drawing approval, longer for full cabinetry. Add 1–2 weeks for inspection, packing and consolidation, then 20–45 days of ocean transit depending on the route, and 1–2 weeks for customs clearance and last-mile delivery. Orders placed in December or early January lose 3–4 weeks to the Chinese New Year shutdown.

Do I need to speak Chinese or visit in person?

Neither is essential, but each helps. Export factories and larger showrooms have English-speaking sales staff; smaller workshops and most mall showrooms do not, and WeChat translation covers simple exchanges but not specification detail. Visiting is the highest-confidence route for a whole home or a hotel because you can sit on the sofa and see finish samples. Many buyers source remotely through a bilingual local team and visit once for sample approval.

What are the biggest risks when buying furniture from China?

The main risks are paying a deposit to a company that is not who it claims to be, receiving goods that differ from the sample, and transit damage from weak packing. Each has a standard control: verify the business licence and pay only to the company bank account, approve a first article and inspect before the balance, and specify export packing in writing. Duty surprises are the fourth risk, avoided by confirming the tariff line with a broker first.

Which Chinese furniture fair should a first-time buyer attend?

CIFF Guangzhou in March is the broadest single event: home furniture in the first phase and office and contract in the second, held in Guangzhou 40–60 minutes from Foshan. Hospitality and contract buyers should add the Dongguan 3F fair or a Foshan showroom day for hotel furniture suppliers. Volume importers of mixed home goods often prefer the Canton Fair’s second phase in April or October.
