Three Days in Foshan’s Furniture Malls: Why “Foshan” on the Label Is Not a Reason to Order

A furniture dealer spent three days in Foshan's landmark mall and livestream showrooms. His verdict: most Foshan furniture is good, a few operators trade on the name — and the regulators have the fines to prove it. Translated, checked and extended for overseas buyers.

Foshan makes good furniture. The word Foshan, on its own, proves nothing about the sofa in front of you.

In short

  • A furniture dealer from Lanzhou spent three days in Foshan’s landmark mall and its livestream showrooms and concluded: most Foshan furniture is good, and a few “rats in a good soup” trade on the name. His account is the most useful piece of Foshan buying advice we have read this year.
  • The regulators agree. In November 2025 the Foshan Furniture Association publicly asked consumers for evidence against bad actors; in August 2026 Lecong’s market supervision bureau fined a livestream seller ¥60,000 for selling “top-grain leather” sofas made partly of PU; the city issued a compliance handbook for furniture livestreaming.
  • Two routes onto the “pirate ship”: buying online through influencers (material substitution, influencer-set prices, ad spend baked in) and flying in to shop the big malls (dealer showrooms with some of the highest rents in China, and no time to negotiate).
  • A real full-grain leather sofa can cost ¥2,000–3,000 from a low-overhead seller and be fake at ¥3,000+ in a high-rent mall. Judge where the seller’s money goes, not the sticker price.
  • The six checks: look at the back of the hide, smell the glue, do the cost arithmetic, ask “factory or channel?”, get the material in writing, and keep evidence — an unboxing video and a ¥200–300 lab test.

“Foshan” on the label is not a reason to order. The city makes some of the best-value furniture in the world, and its name is the most borrowed word in the Chinese furniture trade. The account below was written in September 2026 by a furniture dealer from Lanzhou, 2,000 km away, after three days in Foshan’s most famous mall and its livestream showrooms. We have translated and condensed it, checked the enforcement facts it cites, and added what it means for a buyer who is not 2,000 km away but 8,000.

First, the fair statement: Foshan furniture is good furniture

Ask the team about this

The author is careful about this and so are we. Most furniture that leaves Foshan is well made, which is why buyers fly in all year and why we built a company here. The industry is real: an estimated 30,000 related firms, the world’s largest furniture trading district in Lecong, more than a thousand upholstery factories in Longjiang. “A good pot of soup,” he writes, “that has fed a few rats.”

What makes his piece unusual is that the rats have a paper trail. The numbers below are from Foshan’s own regulators, as cited in the article.

Nov 2025Foshan Furniture Association issues a public statement against firms “eating from Foshan’s bowl while smashing it” and asks consumers for evidenceCases referred to market supervision
¥60,000Fine on a Lecong livestream seller (Aug 2026): “top-grain cowhide” sofas made partly of PU; “13 cm high-resilience foam” mixed with ordinary foam≈ US$8,500
8 / ¥500kCases opened by Lecong market supervision this year; six closed; total penalties about ¥500,000≈ ¥80,000 per case
2026Foshan city publishes a compliance handbook specifically for furniture livestream sellingA rulebook for one sales channel

His arithmetic on the fine is the point: a fake-leather sofa sells for several thousand yuan, a livestream moves tens or hundreds of units a day, and the penalty when caught is ¥60,000. “Everyone can do that sum.” A trade association reduced to crowdsourcing evidence against its own members is not a sign that the problem is rare.

The two ways onto the pirate ship

Ask the team about this

Route 1 · Buying online, following an influencer

The material game. “Genuine leather” that is actually PU. “Eco leather” (生态皮) — shredded leather offcuts bonded with glue, often under 20% leather content, peeling within a year or two. And a testing loophole: above 50% leather content a material can be classified as “leather-type”, so the claim is not entirely false. The swatch they post you shows the face of the hide; the back, where bonded leather gives itself away, arrives with the sofa.

The price game. “Free flights and hotel, come to our factory showroom, factory prices.” The host is not a factory; the host can take you to a dozen factories, and the host sets the price (how the buyer business actually earns). Factory owners the author spoke to called some influencer prices “unbelievable”. And the flow of money: lavish showrooms, high rents, daily ad spend to keep a following that, for a durable good, never buys twice. That cost is in the sofa.

From overseasThe same mechanics work in English on Instagram, TikTok and Alibaba: the video is of someone else’s floor, the “factory price” includes the presenter’s margin, and the leather sample proves nothing about the back of the hide.
How we close itWe do not take supplier commission, so no presenter sits between you and the factory price. Material grade, thickness and coverage are written in both languages; the back of the hide is photographed at inspection.
The tell< 20%leather content in low-grade “eco leather”

Route 2 · Flying in to shop the big malls

The rent. He asked about ground-floor rents in the landmark mall (the Foshan market guide covers which malls, and their hours): “among the highest in the country; I will not print the figure.” The neighbouring mall, floor by floor, was dealers rather than factories, with sticker prices at or above those in Lanzhou.

The clock. A visitor has one or two days. Nobody negotiates a factory price in an afternoon, and the seller knows you are leaving. “You flew to the source, and the price is higher than at home. You thought you cut out the middleman; you flew 2,000 km to feed a more expensive one.”

From overseasMultiply by four: a week in Foshan, a translator, and a container you cannot fill from one showroom. The malls are superb for seeing what exists. They are not, on their own, where the value is.
How we close itOur overhead is an office in Chancheng, not a mall floor, and our fee is stated. We use the malls to shortlist and the factories to price, and we are still here after you fly home.

Route 2, in person. The big malls are the best place in the world to see what is made. The rent on this floor is also in the price of what is on it.

The cost arithmetic: judge where the money goes, not the sticker

Ask the team about this

The author’s most useful idea is a way of thinking rather than a rule — the same arithmetic we walk through in one sofa, three prices. The same full-grain cowhide sofa cannot be sold for ¥3,000-odd (≈US$450) from a floor with nationally rare rent, a lavish fit-out and daily ad buying — the hide alone costs more than that. So at that price in that place, something in the sofa is not what it says. Meanwhile a seller with low rent, few staff and no ad spend can sell a real full-grain sofa from about ¥2,000 (≈US$300), and some do.

Same sofa, two sellers Where the price comes from
SellerLandmark-mall or livestream showroomLow-overhead seller or factory via a fee-based agent
Rent & fit-outAmong the highest in China; marble and spotlightsIndustrial-park unit or factory showroom
Customer acquisitionDaily paid traffic; influencer margin; free flights and hotelsReferrals; a stated service fee
Price of a “full-grain” 3-seater≈ ¥3,000 — below the cost of the hide≈ ¥2,000–3,000 for the real thing, or ¥6,000–9,000 with a beech frame and HR foam specified
What you probably getPU or bonded on non-contact faces; mixed foamWhat the spec says, photographed at inspection
Indicative RMB figures from the source article and from our 2026 orders; every real quotation depends on frame, foam and hide. The comparison is about overhead, not about a particular seller.

For an overseas buyer the same logic scales: an agent whose costs are an office and whose income is a disclosed fee will usually land you a better sofa than a mall floor whose costs are rent and advertising — even after the fee. The comparison to make is the complete landed price against the written spec, not the sticker against the word “Foshan”.

The six checks, and what we add for export orders

Ask the team about this
  1. Look at the back. Top-grain cowhide has a natural suede-like flesh side; PU and bonded leathers have a fabric backing. Lift a seat cushion or look behind the back panel when the goods arrive.Export addition: we photograph the hide back at the factory, before packing, so you are not the first person to look.
  2. Smell it. A strong glue smell points to bonded leather or poor adhesives.Export addition: foam and adhesive off-gassing is also a container problem; we specify low-VOC glues on request.
  3. Do the arithmetic. If the price cannot cover the material and the seller’s visible overhead, the material is not what it says.Export addition: run it on the landed price, including freight, duty and our fee.
  4. Ask “factory or channel?” (what a real factory floor looks like, zone by zone.) Free flights and hotels are paid for by someone. In a showroom, ask “工厂直营还是经销?” and watch how the answer comes.Export addition: we state maker or dealer on every shortlist, and check the licence behind the name.
  5. Get it in black and white. “Top-grain cowhide” on the order, and whether it means contact surfaces or all surfaces; have customer service confirm the material in the chat log. These words are what a “refund plus three times” claim (退一赔三) is built on.Export addition: the same words in the English contract, with thickness in mm and the test method.
  6. Keep evidence. Film the unboxing. If the material is in doubt, a third-party lab test costs ¥200–300 and has won buyers full compensation.Export addition: our inspection report is your evidence file before loading, when the balance is still unpaid.
Foam samples of different densities laid out for inspection
Check 2 and the foam question. “13 cm high-resilience foam” is a density and a thickness, both measurable before the cover goes on.
Leather being fitted over a rail frame in a Foshan upholstery workshop
Check 4, on the floor. A factory can show you leather going onto its own frames. A channel can only show you the showroom.

Send your brief

The author’s conclusion is that Foshan has not wronged anyone; businesses using “Foshan” as a front have. The government and the association are dealing with the rats; the buyer still needs to keep their wits. Our version of keeping your wits, on your behalf:

FAQ

Questions this article raises

Is furniture cheaper in Foshan than elsewhere in China?

At the factory, usually yes. In the landmark malls and influencer showrooms, often no: a Lanzhou dealer found mall prices equal to or higher than in his own city, because Foshan’s showroom rents and ad spend are in the price. The saving is at the maker, and it takes time or a local representative to reach it.

What is “eco leather” (生态皮) on a Chinese furniture listing?

Bonded leather: shredded leather offcuts pressed with adhesive, often under 20% leather content in low-grade versions, prone to peeling within one to two years. Because a material over 50% leather content can be classified as “leather-type”, sellers can call some of it “genuine” without being fully false. Ask for the grade, not the adjective.

How do I check leather is real when the sofa arrives?

Look at the back of the hide under a seat cushion or behind a back panel: real top-grain shows a suede-like flesh side, PU and bonded leather show a fabric backing. Smell for glue. If in doubt, a third-party lab test costs about ¥200–300. Film the unboxing first.

Are influencer “factory tours” in Foshan genuine?

The factories may be real; the host usually is not one. The presenter chooses the factories, sets the price and funds the free flights and hotel from the margin. Factory owners in Foshan have themselves described some influencer prices as unreasonable. Ask who owns the production line and pay the entity on the business licence.

What has Foshan done about furniture fraud?

According to the source article: the Foshan Furniture Association issued a public statement in November 2025 referring bad actors to market supervision and asking consumers for evidence; Lecong’s market supervision bureau has opened eight cases this year with about ¥500,000 in penalties, including a ¥60,000 fine for mislabelled leather and foam in a livestream; and the city published a compliance handbook for furniture livestreaming.
