- Your packed volume is under about 15 m³.
- You can accept 35–45 days once consolidation and deconsolidation are counted on a lane that is already long.
- Nothing in the order is a stone top, a glass panel or a single heavy slab.
- You accept that terminal handling, deconsolidation and the customs entry are charged per consignment, not per cubic metre.

Shipping Furniture From China to the United Kingdom
Furniture shipped from Foshan reaches Felixstowe or Southampton in 30–40 days port to port on current Cape of Good Hope routing. Most furniture carries 0% duty under the UK Global Tariff, and import VAT is 20% on the customs value including freight and duty, reclaimable by a VAT-registered business through postponed accounting. The catch is unique to Britain: since Brexit the Trade Remedies Authority sets anti-dumping duties independently of Brussels, so an EU clearance is no guide. Source Foshan, a sourcing agent based in Foshan, China, lists the commodity codes early so your broker can check them against the UKGT before a deposit is paid.

What leaves Foshan, whatever the destination.
The same three steps stand behind every container we send to United Kingdom. These are our own warehouse photographs, not stock images.

01 · The one decision
A full container or an LCL consignment?
The UK lane is the cheapest 40 ft of the destinations we cover and among the slowest. That combination makes the container decision unusually clear-cut at volume, and the timetable the thing to plan around.
- Your packed volume passes about 15 m³; a 20 ft loads 28–33 m³ of crated furniture.
- You are furnishing a whole house or a set of units: 45–70 m³, which is a 40 ft high-cube.
- A 40 ft at USD 2,800–4,600 is the cheapest big box on any of our lanes — the per-cubic-metre case for it is stronger here than elsewhere.
- The order includes marble, sintered stone or solid-timber slabs that should be handled once.
A three-seat sofa carton is 1.6–2.2 m³; four stacked dining chairs 0.6–0.9 m³; a knock-down wardrobe 0.5–0.8 m³. Send the list and we return the packed volume per line.
Felixstowe handles about 48% of UK container trade and has the most frequent services; Southampton has been turning trucks round three to five days faster through 2026. Where the delivery address is in the south or west, Southampton often wins the week back.

The fourteen lines a door-to-door quotation has to show.
Nearly every bad shipping story on this route starts with a quotation that was shorter than this list. Paste it into your next enquiry and ask for a price against each line. A forwarder who will not break the price out is quoting you a number, not a service.
- Inland move, factory to warehousePer supplier, or stated as waived. Buyers are caught by this line more than any other.
- Warehouse receipt and check-inCounted against the packing list, photographed, with the free storage days and the daily rate afterwards.
- Re-packing and cratingWhich items get closed crates, which get open frames, which stay in cartons — and the price for each.
- Timber treatment and the IPPC markTreatment, marking and the certificate, priced separately from the crate.
- Measured packed volume, line by lineThe m³ you are billed for, with the measurements it came from.
- Export declaration and certificate of originIncluding who files it and what it costs if the certificate is issued late.
- Ocean freight, with the surcharges namedBase rate plus each surcharge spelled out, and how long the rate is held.
- Marine insuranceThe premium, the deductible, and what the fragile-goods exclusion actually excludes.
- Destination terminal and deconsolidationTerminal handling, deconsolidation, and the free days before storage starts.
- Customs entryWho is importer of record, what value is declared, and whether duty and tax are inside the price or outside it.
- DeliveryVehicle size, kerbside or room of choice, stairs and lifts, waiting time, and the radius the price covers.
- Assembly and packaging removalBoth, or neither, but in writing. A container leaves roughly a tonne of crate and carton behind.
- Import VAT at 20%Shown as its own line, with whether it is postponed, paid at entry, or reclaimable by you.
- Hoist or crane accessPriced before the truck arrives, not after.
Send us the same list. We answer it line by line, in writing, before you pay anything.

How long does it take, week by week?
From the deposit to the last crate leaving your drive. The sea leg is the part nobody can compress.
- Foshan Consolidation warehouse, all suppliers
- Yantian / Nansha Load port, Shenzhen or Guangzhou day 0
- Singapore Usual transhipment call day 5
- Cape of Good Hope Suez is not in use on this lane day 16
- Felixstowe Arrival; Southampton for the south and west day 34
The UK sits at the end of the Asia–Europe string, so a British box is often discharged after the continental calls. Combined with Cape routing that makes this the slowest lane on the site — and the cheapest 40 ft. Plan the date backwards from arrival, not forwards from the deposit.
- Week 0Collected and coded
Pieces from each factory collected at one Foshan warehouse and re-crated. Commodity codes go on the quotation now so your broker can check them against live TRA measures, not after the ship sails.
- Week 6–10Inspection and loading
Every item photographed against the spec; the balance falls due after you approve the report. Timber treated to ISPM 15 before the container is sealed.
- Week 10–16At sea
30–40 days Shenzhen to Felixstowe or Southampton on Cape of Good Hope routing. The longest sea leg of our destinations.
- Week 16–17Customs clearance
Declaration lodged by your broker, duty where it applies and 20% VAT settled or postponed. EORI number required.
- Week 17–18Delivery and carry-in
Delivery booked to the address, crates opened, pieces carried in and assembled, packaging taken away the same day.

Duty, tax and clearance into United Kingdom
Britain charges no duty on most furniture and the same 20% VAT as France. What makes the UK different is that since Brexit its trade-remedy decisions are its own, and they have teeth.
The UK Global Tariff sets duty at the ten-digit commodity code. Upholstered sofas, wooden beds, dining tables, desks and aluminium outdoor furniture are commonly 0%. Assuming rather than checking is how importers get a bill months later.
Since Brexit the TRA can impose anti-dumping duties on its own evidence. A UK importer was hit with a 43% TRA levy on Chinese flat-pack furniture in March 2026. An EU clearance tells you nothing about the UK position, and vice versa.
Import VAT is 20% of the customs value plus freight plus duty. A VAT-registered business should use postponed VAT accounting and declare it on the return rather than paying at the border. A private importer pays it and does not reclaim it.
You need a GB EORI number to import in your own name and a broker to lodge the declaration. We are not a customs broker: we supply the codes, the packed volume per line and the documents early enough to be checked.
06
Clearance is not delivery. What happens at the door.
The UK delivery leg is short once the box is cleared. Access, not distance, decides what the day costs.
A London mews, a Victorian terrace with no side return, or a single-track lane decides the vehicle. We ask for photographs of the approach.
No lift and a narrow stairwell means a larger crew and a slower day, priced before the order is placed.
Crates are opened outside, pieces carried in, beds and tables assembled and positioned by room against the packing list.
Timber, cardboard and wrap leave with the crew the same day rather than filling the site or the kerb.
07 · What arrival looks like
Photographs from the research file.
Other people’s shipments, not ours. In September 2026 we read 20 first-hand Chinese-language shipping notes and their comment threads from buyers who moved furniture from China to the United Kingdom, and cleared their photographs for publication. They show what the process actually looks like at the kerb and in the room. Our own delivery photographs are further down, under case notes.

Compiled in September 2026 from 20 first-hand Chinese-language shipping notes on the China–the United Kingdom route and their comment threads, cross-read against our own files. What we doDocuments are complete before arrival. Free time at a UK terminal is short and the daily rate afterwards is not.
09 · The honest version
When a UK import is not worth it
Britain has no duty on most furniture and the longest sea leg we run. Time, not tariff, is what kills a UK project — along with one trade-remedy risk that has no EU equivalent.
- You need it inside four months. Thirty to forty days at sea plus production and clearance puts a typical order at seventeen to nineteen weeks. If the completion date is fixed and close, buy locally for this project.
- Flat-pack and commodity ready-to-assemble. UK retailers import this at volumes you will not reach, and a March 2026 TRA levy of 43% on Chinese flat-pack shows how quickly the position can move against you.
- Under about 15 m³ with no custom content. The duty saving is nil because the duty is nil; you are only saving on the ex-works price, and LCL destination charges eat a good part of it.
- You have not checked the current TRA measures. An EU clearance is no guide in either direction. Check the commodity codes against live UK measures before the deposit, not after the container sails.
Where the UK works well is custom and mid-to-high specification at container volume, planned backwards from the completion date. Ireland is the shorter lane if the project can clear inside the EU instead.
FAQ
Shipping furniture to United Kingdom, answered.
How much is import duty on furniture from China to the UK?
Most furniture carries 0% duty under the UK Global Tariff — upholstered sofas, wooden beds, dining tables, desks and aluminium outdoor furniture are commonly duty-free. But the UKGT sets the rate at the ten-digit commodity code, so the classification has to be checked rather than assumed. Import VAT of 20% is charged separately on the customs value including freight and any duty.
How long does furniture take from China to the UK?
Thirty to forty days port to port from Shenzhen to Felixstowe or Southampton on current Cape of Good Hope routing — the longest sea leg of the destinations we cover. Add two to four weeks of production and consolidation before the sailing and about two weeks for clearance and a delivery booking. Door to door, a typical order runs seventeen to nineteen weeks from deposit, so a dated project needs to start earlier than it would for Australia or the US.
Does UK anti-dumping duty apply to Chinese furniture?
It can, and this is the part post-Brexit importers most often get wrong. The Trade Remedies Authority sets UK trade remedies independently of the European Commission, so an EU position is no guide either way. A UK importer was hit with a 43% TRA levy on Chinese flat-pack furniture in March 2026. Check the current TRA measures against your commodity codes before you place the order, not after the container sails.
Felixstowe or Southampton?
Felixstowe handles about 48% of UK container trade and has the most frequent sailings, which usually means the shortest wait for a slot. Southampton has been turning trucks round three to five days faster through 2026 and suits addresses in the south and west. Where either works, the inland haulage saving usually decides it rather than the ocean rate.
Can I reclaim the 20% import VAT?
A VAT-registered UK business can, and should use postponed VAT accounting so the VAT is declared on the return rather than paid at the border — which removes the cash-flow hit entirely. A private individual furnishing their own home pays the 20% and cannot reclaim it, so it belongs in the budget from the first quotation.
Will there be a hoist, crane or remote-area charge after the container arrives?
Only if the access needs one, and we price it before the sailing rather than after. The charge is real — UK buyers report hoist bills of several hundred pounds raised once the truck was already outside — but it is entirely predictable from the floor, the lift dimensions and the stair width. Send those three measurements with your list and the number is on the quotation from the start.
Is import VAT included in a door-to-door price, and can I reclaim it?
We show import VAT at the standard 20% as its own line, outside the freight. A VAT-registered business importing in its own name can normally recover it through its return or account for it under postponed VAT accounting; a private importer cannot. Whether a particular entry qualifies is a question for HMRC or your accountant, and we will not guess it for you.
What commodity code will the furniture be entered under?
We give you the ten-digit code for each line with the quotation, and the packing list, the invoice and the entry are built from the same measured file so they reconcile. A wrong code or documents that do not match are the two things that turn a routine UK entry into a week of storage charges. Confirm the code against the UK Global Tariff before the container sails.
