Shipping Furniture From China to Singapore

Furniture shipped from Foshan reaches Singapore in 4–8 days port to port — by a wide margin the shortest and cheapest lane we run. A 40 ft container is USD 585–715 and LCL about USD 15 per cubic metre. Furniture enters duty-free: Singapore levies customs duty on only four categories and furniture is not one of them. You pay 9% GST on the CIF value and nothing else. Source Foshan, a sourcing agent based in Foshan, China, consolidates the order, inspects it, ships it and handles after-sales on the ground — we have run repair call-outs in Singapore.

01 · The one decision

A full container or an LCL consignment?

Singapore breaks the usual arithmetic. A 40 ft container costs less than a single European LCL consignment, so the case for taking a whole box arrives far earlier than on any other route.

Ship LCL when
  • Your packed volume is genuinely small — under about 12 m³.
  • At roughly USD 15 per cubic metre the sea leg is almost free; the destination charges are what you are paying for.
  • You want the shortest possible lead time on a handful of pieces — LCL here is 10–15 days door to door.
  • The order is robust enough to share a container.
Ship a full container when
  • Your packed volume passes about 12 m³ — lower than the 15 m³ threshold that applies elsewhere.
  • A 20 ft at USD 450–550 or a 40 ft at USD 585–715 is cheap enough that the sealed box is worth it for the handling alone.
  • The order includes stone, glass or solid timber you would rather nobody else touched.
  • You are furnishing a whole condominium or a serviced apartment block: 45–70 m³, which is a 40 ft high-cube.
Packed volume, and where the decision flips
LCL territory under 12 m³
One 20 ft container 30 m³ loaded
One 40 ft high-cube 68 m³ loaded

A three-seat sofa carton is 1.6–2.2 m³; four stacked dining chairs 0.6–0.9 m³; a knock-down wardrobe 0.5–0.8 m³. Send the list and we return the packed volume per line.

On this lane the freight is rarely the deciding number. What decides a Singapore project is the building: service lift booking windows, condominium management approvals and delivery time slots are tighter here than anywhere else we ship.

The fourteen lines a door-to-door quotation has to show.

Nearly every bad shipping story on this route starts with a quotation that was shorter than this list. Paste it into your next enquiry and ask for a price against each line. A forwarder who will not break the price out is quoting you a number, not a service.

  1. Inland move, factory to warehousePer supplier, or stated as waived. Buyers are caught by this line more than any other.
  2. Warehouse receipt and check-inCounted against the packing list, photographed, with the free storage days and the daily rate afterwards.
  3. Re-packing and cratingWhich items get closed crates, which get open frames, which stay in cartons — and the price for each.
  4. Timber treatment and the IPPC markTreatment, marking and the certificate, priced separately from the crate.
  5. Measured packed volume, line by lineThe m³ you are billed for, with the measurements it came from.
  6. Export declaration and certificate of originIncluding who files it and what it costs if the certificate is issued late.
  7. Ocean freight, with the surcharges namedBase rate plus each surcharge spelled out, and how long the rate is held.
  8. Marine insuranceThe premium, the deductible, and what the fragile-goods exclusion actually excludes.

04

How long does it take, week by week?

From the deposit to the last crate leaving your drive. The sea leg is the part nobody can compress.

The route4–8 days port to port — our shortest lane
  1. Foshan Consolidation warehouse, all suppliers
  2. Yantian / Nansha Load port, Shenzhen or Guangzhou day 0
  3. South China Sea Direct, no transhipment day 2
  4. Singapore (PSA) Arrival; TradeNet permit, same or next day day 6

The voyage is shorter than the production run, which changes how a Singapore project is planned: the schedule is set in Foshan and by the building’s delivery window, not by the ship.

  1. Week 0Collected and crated

Pieces from each factory collected at one Foshan warehouse, checked against the specification and rebuilt into braced timber crates.

  2. Week 6–10Inspection, loading, lift booked

Every item photographed against the spec. The service lift window and building approval are arranged now, because the voyage is shorter than the booking lead time.

  3. Week 10At sea

4–8 days from Shenzhen or Guangzhou. The sea leg is shorter than the paperwork.

  4. Week 11Permit and GST

An import permit is declared through TradeNet and 9% GST is paid on the CIF value. Clearance is typically same-day or next-day.

  5. Week 11–12Delivery and carry-in

Lift booked with building management, crates opened, pieces carried in and assembled, packaging taken away within the delivery window.

05

Duty, tax and clearance into Singapore

Singapore is the simplest clearance of any destination we cover. Furniture pays no duty at all; the only fiscal line is GST, and the process is same-day electronic.

Duty: none on furniture

Singapore charges customs duty on four categories only — intoxicating liquors, tobacco, motor vehicles and petroleum products. Furniture under Chapter 94 is dutiable at nil. There is no origin certificate to obtain and no preference to claim, because there is nothing to reduce.

GST: 9% on the CIF value

Charged on cost, insurance and freight. A GST-registered business claims it back on its return; a private importer does not. It applies regardless of value.

TradeNet and a declaring agent

Import permits are lodged electronically through TradeNet, usually cleared the same or next working day. You need a declaring agent or a freight forwarder acting as one. This is the fastest clearance of any route on this site.

Buildings, not borders, are the constraint

Condominium management approval, service lift bookings and narrow delivery windows are the real scheduling risk on a Singapore job. We book them before the container sails, because a missed window can cost a week.

06

Clearance is not delivery. What happens at the door.

Delivery in Singapore is a building-management exercise. The port is quick; the loading bay is not.

Service lift booking

Most condominiums require a booked lift window, a deposit and proof of insurance. We arrange it before arrival rather than on the day.

Protection and permits

Lift and corridor protection is usually mandatory and sometimes inspected. It is part of the delivery scope, not an extra.

Uncrating and assembly

Crates are opened outside or in the loading bay, pieces carried in, beds and tables assembled and positioned by room against the packing list.

After-sales on the ground

We have sent technicians to Singapore addresses to repair transit damage in situ — wine cabinet, bookcase and dining table, each signed off within two hours. The case note is linked below.

07 · What arrival looks like

Photographs from the research file.

These are China-end photographs from the same September 2026 research file — other people’s consignments, cleared for publication. There is no separate photographic record for the Singapore lane in that file, so rather than pad this page with stock images we show the packing stage that decides whether a shipment to Singapore arrives intact. Our own delivery photographs are further down, under case notes.

Published with the rights holder’s permission. Faces, house numbers, vehicle plates and third-party company marks have been cropped or redacted; nothing else in these frames has been altered.

08 · Field notes

What goes wrong, in the words of people who have already done it

Compiled in September 2026 from first-hand Chinese-language notes on export packing, consolidation and timber treatment, cross-read against our own warehouse files. The left column is what shippers reported going wrong; the right column is what we do about it.

  • The trap

A quote priced per m³ before anyone has measured anything.

    What we do

We measure and photograph every line at the warehouse and send the packed dimensions before you pay. Knock-down pieces and voids filled with soft goods are where 15 m³ becomes 12.

  • The trap

Solid-timber crates shipped without treatment or an IPPC mark.

    What we do

Crates are treated and marked before loading, or built from plywood, which is outside the rule. Untreated timber is the one packing mistake that can send a container back.

  • The trap

A treatment certificate that has expired, or that does not match the cargo.

    What we do

The certificate is issued from the final packing list after loading, and timed close to the sailing. Certificates have a short life and a mismatched pallet count is enough to hold the box.

  • The trap

    Packaging changed after treatment.

    What we do

All crating is finished before treatment. Swapping a crate afterwards voids it, and nobody notices until the container is at the far end.

  • The trap

Bark, knots or insect holes on otherwise treated timber.

    What we do

Crate timber is debarked and inspected. Treated wood still fails inspection if it carries bark.

  • The trap

Crates nailed shut, then prised open by customs.

    What we do

Lids are screwed, not nailed, so an inspection can be closed again properly rather than re-taped by a stranger.

09 · The honest version

When a Singapore import is not worth it

Freight is almost free on this lane and duty is nil, so the usual objections do not apply. What can still sink a Singapore project is the building and the quantity.

We will tell you not to
  • You cannot secure a service lift window. Condominium management approval, a booked lift slot, a deposit and mandatory protection are not optional. A missed window can cost a week of storage on goods that crossed the sea in five days.
  • One or two pieces you can buy locally. With a 9% GST and no duty the saving on a small order is real but modest, and Singapore retail is competitive. It is at whole-home and multi-unit volume that this route pulls away.
  • A piece that will not fit the lift or the corridor. Measure the lift, the lobby turn and the apartment door before the factory cuts the frame, not after. We ask for those dimensions with the brief.
  • You need it next week. The voyage is four to eight days, but production is still 30–60. The short sea leg does not shorten the factory.

For a condominium fit-out, a serviced apartment block or a whole home, this is the cheapest and fastest route we run — and we support it after delivery, as the August call-out shows.

FAQ

Shipping furniture to Singapore, answered.

Is there import duty on furniture from China to Singapore?

No. Singapore levies customs duty on four categories only — intoxicating liquors, tobacco, motor vehicles and petroleum products — and furniture is not among them. Furniture under Chapter 94 enters duty-free. The only fiscal line is GST at 9% on the CIF value, which a GST-registered business recovers on its return.

How long does furniture take from China to Singapore?

Four to eight days port to port from Shenzhen or Guangzhou, and seven to twelve days from Shanghai or Ningbo. It is by a wide margin the shortest sea leg of any destination we ship to, and clearance through TradeNet is usually same-day or next-day. What sets the real timetable is production and consolidation in Foshan, not the voyage.

How much does a container from China to Singapore cost?

About USD 450–550 for a 20 ft and USD 585–715 for a 40 ft as at September 2026, after a roughly 30% month-on-month rise. LCL runs around USD 15 per cubic metre for the sea leg. These are the lowest freight numbers on this site by a considerable margin, which is why the case for taking a whole container arrives at about 12 m³ here rather than 15.

What is the hardest part of a Singapore furniture delivery?

The building, not the border. Most condominiums require a booked service lift window, a refundable deposit, proof of insurance and mandatory lift and corridor protection, and the windows are often two or three hours. We book the lift and clear the management approval before the container sails, because a missed slot can cost a week while the goods sit in storage.

Do you handle after-sales in Singapore?

Yes, and we have. In August 2026 three pieces arrived with transit damage — a wine cabinet edge, a bookcase door frame and a dining table base. A technician attended on site, repaired and colour-matched each one, and the client signed the service form for all three within two hours each. The full case note with photographs and time stamps is linked on this page.

Does my crate need to be fumigated, and how long is the certificate valid?

Only solid-timber packaging needs treatment, and the certificate has a short life — commonly about three weeks — so it is timed close to the sailing rather than issued early. Plywood and other engineered boards are outside the rule entirely, which is why we build most crates from plywood and reserve solid timber for loads that genuinely need it. Treatment is applied before the crate is closed; swapping packaging afterwards voids it, and nobody discovers that until the container is at the far end.

How is LCL volume measured, and how do I know I am not paying for air?

Every line is measured and photographed at the warehouse and the packed dimensions are sent to you before you pay. Volume is where LCL quotations go wrong: a timber frame adds roughly a third to what it protects, loose bulky items are billed on the space they occupy, and knock-down construction with the voids inside wardrobes and sofas filled can take 15 m³ down to 12. That is a whole price band on most lanes.

What does proper export crating actually look like?

Board thickness follows the weight inside: roughly 15–18 mm plywood for pieces under 100 kg, 20 mm and up with steel strapping from 100 to 500 kg, and a framed structure on forklift skids above that. Inside, 2–3 cm of clearance filled with cushioning, so the piece cannot move but is not compressed. Lids are screwed rather than nailed, so a customs inspection can be closed again properly. A crate takes three to seven days from an approved drawing.
