A full container or an LCL consignment?
New Zealand has the shortest sea leg and the strictest biosecurity of any route we run. The container decision is ordinary; the timber preparation is not.
- Your packed volume passes about 15 m³; a 20 ft loads 28–33 m³ of crated furniture in practice.
- You are furnishing a whole house: 45–70 m³, which is a 40 ft high-cube.
- The order includes solid timber, stone or glass — and in New Zealand, solid timber furniture is also inspectable, not just the packaging.
- You would rather your biosecurity outcome depended only on your own goods.

The LCL biosecurity point is worth weighing. In a shared container your clearance timetable is partly in other shippers' hands; in your own box it is not. On a marginal volume that is a real argument for the container.

How long does it take, week by week?
From the deposit to the last crate leaving your drive. The sea leg is the part nobody can compress.

Duty, tax and clearance into New Zealand
Duty is usually nil and GST is simple. New Zealand's biosecurity regime is the part that actually decides whether your container moves on schedule.
Chinese-origin goods, furniture included, are a common zero-duty category under the free trade agreement — but only against a valid Certificate of Origin issued in China. The exemption is never applied automatically. We obtain the certificate with the shipment, not after it.
Charged on the customs value plus freight, insurance and any duty. A GST-registered business claims it back; a private importer does not. It applies to imported goods regardless of value.
All wooden packaging must be heat-treated or methyl-bromide fumigated to IPPC standards and marked. Solid timber furniture is also inspectable. New Zealand's regime is among the strictest anywhere: an unmarked pallet can put the container into inspection, treatment at your cost and a delay measured in weeks.

Clearance is not delivery. What happens at the door.
Auckland is a short run from the port. The rest of the country is a domestic freight leg in its own right, and it belongs in the quotation from the start.
A Christchurch or Queenstown address means a domestic leg after clearance, including the Cook Strait if it is the South Island. It is quoted before the order, not discovered after.
Steep drives, narrow streets and hillside sections decide the vehicle. We ask for photographs of the approach.
Crates are opened outside, pieces carried in, beds and tables assembled and positioned by room against the packing list.
Timber, cardboard and wrap leave with the crew the same day — and treated timber cannot simply go into a domestic bin.

How long does furniture take from China to New Zealand?
Twenty to twenty-three days port to port in a full container from Shenzhen to Auckland, which is the shortest sea leg of any route we run, and twenty-one to twenty-seven days as an LCL consignment. Add two to four weeks of production and consolidation before the sailing and one to two weeks for customs, MPI biosecurity and a delivery booking. Door to door, a typical order runs thirteen to fifteen weeks from deposit.
Do I pay import duty on furniture from China to New Zealand?
Usually not. Furniture is a common zero-duty category under the New Zealand–China Free Trade Agreement, but the preference is only granted against a valid Certificate of Origin issued in China — it is never applied automatically. GST of 15% is charged separately on the customs value plus freight, insurance and any duty, and is claimable by a GST-registered business.
What are the MPI biosecurity rules for furniture from China?
All wooden packaging entering New Zealand must be heat-treated or fumigated with methyl bromide to IPPC standards and carry the mark. Solid timber furniture can also be inspected on arrival. New Zealand's biosecurity regime is among the strictest in the world, and an unmarked pallet or a piece of untreated bracing is enough to put the whole container into inspection, treatment at your cost and a delay of a week or more. All timber on our shipments is treated and marked before loading and the certificate travels with the documents.
Is LCL or a full container cheaper to New Zealand?
Below about 15 m³, LCL. Above it a 20 ft container is usually cheaper per cubic metre. There is a second argument for the container on this route that does not apply elsewhere: in a shared container your biosecurity clearance depends partly on the other shippers' compliance, and in your own box it does not.
Can you deliver outside Auckland?
Yes. Auckland is a short run from the port; Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown and the rest of the country are a domestic freight leg after clearance, including the Cook Strait for South Island addresses. We quote that leg with the rest of the job rather than leaving it to be discovered after the container lands.
