New Zealand to Foshan: the long flight, and a route built around MPI paperwork
Auckland and Christchurch both fly nonstop to Guangzhou, twelve to thirteen hours and a four-hour time shift. New Zealand has the strictest biosecurity queue in the world, and a crate mark that is one digit off will find it — so the paperwork starts before the design does.

Landing, then the transfer
Every route ends the same way: an hour on the ground between the arrivals hall and Lecong.
Do not plan on the Hong Kong ferry. The Shunde Port crossing stopped on 16 July 2026 and has not restarted. Any itinerary built on that ferry is already broken.
The days on the ground
Five days is the useful minimum for a whole home or a hotel brief. Appointments are booked before you land, and each evening you get a written recap of what you saw and what is still open.
- Day 1
Land and calibrate
Arrival day. Transfer in, check in, and walk one mall so the prices stop being abstract
- Day 2
Lecong showrooms
Yesterday was calibration. Today is the shortlist: Lecong, against your own list, priced line by line
- Day 3
Longjiang factories
Longjiang: frames, foam, fabric and finish, seen at the factory rather than in a room set
- Day 4
Custom work and samples
Custom work and materials. By evening you should have a written recap, not a camera roll
- Day 5

Field noteDo not drive yourself. The factory lanes are narrow, the traffic is aggressive, and you will arrive at the showroom tired. Taxis between stops are cheap.食盐吃不胖(完工版, Xiaohongshu

Where the days are actually spent
Outdoor pieces are judged on material and finish, which is easier at the factory.
Lecong 乐从
Where the trip starts: room-set showrooms, a hundred options before lunch, prices you can argue with.
Longjiang 龙江
Upholstery and sofa factories, plus the material markets behind them. Where a showroom price gets explained.

What New Zealand buyers get caught on
- 01MPI is stricter than DAFF on some wood packaging and packaging materials. Every solid-wood pallet, crate batten and skid needs heat treatment and the IPPC mark; plywood, MDF and cardboard are exempt.
- 02Rattan, seagrass, bark-edged timber and any soil or seed residue get found. Outdoor and natural-fibre pieces deserve a packed-unit photo before the container closes.
- 03Electrical goods need an RCM mark and 230 V under the AS/NZS framework, which New Zealand shares with Australia.
- 04New Zealand buyers are usually designing for a smaller floor plate than Australian ones — furniture that fits a Sydney apartment can be oversized for Auckland.
- 05Sailing is typically 3–4 weeks to Auckland. Add biosecurity inspection time and you are planning six weeks from loading to delivery.
Practical specification checks, not certification advice. Confirm current requirements with your importer or testing body.

| Line | Planning figure |
|---|---|
| Flights | NZD 1,400–2,300 return; Auckland nonstop is usually the better fare and the shorter trip |
| Hotel | Lecong or Chancheng, 4-star, NZD 100–190 per night |
| Guide day | USD 150 guide only · USD 250 with car · USD 299 with a 7-seat SUV |
| Biosecurity | budget for a re-crate if the marks are wrong — the cheapest fix is a photo before sealing |

Questions New Zealand buyers ask
How long is the flight from New Zealand to Foshan?
About 12–13 hours nonstop from Auckland to Guangzhou, slightly longer from Christchurch. Then about an hour by road to Lecong, or the Guangfo intercity rail to Foshan West.
Do New Zealanders need a visa for China?
No, up to 30 days. New Zealand is on China's unilateral visa-free list, currently valid to 31 December 2026. Confirm the term with the embassy before booking.
What does MPI look for that DAFF does not?
The rules are close, but MPI has been notably strict on natural-fibre products — rattan, seagrass, coir and untreated timber with bark — and on residual soil. Photograph the packed unit, not just the room set.
Can you meet me at Auckland-style midnight arrivals?
Yes. The driver tracks the flight and waits in arrivals with a name board. Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Macau, Zhuhai, Dongguan and Zhongshan are all covered, plus Foshan West by rail.
How many days do I need in Foshan?
Four to five. The flight is long enough that a three-day trip usually costs more in airfare per useful hour than a five-day one.
Elsewhere in Oceania
A neighbouring market may suit the same container. These three share the region, not the paperwork.
