Ethiopia to Foshan: the nonstop, and a cargo-first plan
Addis Ababa flies nonstop to Guangzhou in about ten hours, but the hard part starts after the container leaves. Ethiopia is landlocked, and almost everything moves through Djibouti — which makes the freight route, not the furniture price, the decision that matters.

Schedules change with the season — confirm the operating carrier before booking. The airport code is the part that stays put.

A paid service, not a free transfer: one arrival, one vehicle, one drop-off. Parking included; tolls at cost. The credit is valid for six months from your arrival date.
Landing, then the transfer
Every route ends the same way: an hour on the ground between the arrivals hall and Lecong.
Do not plan on the Hong Kong ferry. That route closed in July 2026 with no published reopening. Road or high-speed rail is the way in.
The days on the ground
Four days is the working minimum for anything beyond a single category. Appointments are booked before you land, and each evening you get a written recap of what you saw and what is still open.
- Day 1
Land and calibrate
Land, transfer, rest — then a short walk through Lecong to calibrate prices
- Day 2
Lecong showrooms
Showroom day in Lecong — two or three options a line, every one photographed and priced
- Day 3
Factories behind the malls
Today belongs to the workshops, in Longjiang or Nanzhuang
- Day 4
Samples and sign-off
Samples, custom pieces, then sign off and leave with a specification

Where the days are actually spent
Upholstery is where showroom prices and factory prices diverge most, so both ends are worth seeing.
Lecong 乐从
Trading malls and room-set showrooms. A hundred sofas in a morning, priced retail-facing. The shortlist starts here.
Longjiang 龙江
Sofa and upholstery factories. Come here after the malls, when you want to know what the price is made of.

Where to stay
Where you sleep decides how much of the day you spend in a car.
Sofitel Foshan 佛山罗浮宫索菲特酒店

What Ethiopian buyers get caught on
- 01Ethiopia has no seaport. Goods land at Djibouti and move by road or rail to Addis, so the freight quote must include the Djibouti leg, the border and the inland haulage as separate lines.
- 02Foreign-currency availability is the real constraint. Confirm with your bank how the payment will be funded and released before agreeing a deposit — a supplier who has waited three weeks for a transfer will not hold a production slot.
- 03The Ethiopian Standards Authority covers some imported goods; ask the supplier for the test reports before production rather than after, because testing cannot be done at the port of Djibouti.
- 04220 V, Type C and F plugs. A fixture built for the Chinese domestic market is the wrong product, not a paperwork problem.
- 05Addis is one of Africa's largest air-cargo hubs. For samples and small urgent pieces, air freight is genuinely competitive with sea plus the inland leg.
Practical specification checks, not certification advice. Confirm current requirements with your importer or testing body.

Trip cost, before any furniture
| Line | Planning figure |
|---|---|
| Flights | USD 700–1,200 return on the nonstop from Addis to Guangzhou |
| Hotel | Lecong or Chancheng, 4-star, USD 60–110 per night |
| Airport pickup | USD 149 from Guangzhou or Shenzhen, credited against your sourcing fee if you order within six months |
| Inland freight | Djibouti to Addis is quoted separately from the ocean leg — ask for both before comparing suppliers |

Questions Ethiopian buyers ask
How long is the flight from Ethiopia to Foshan?
About ten hours nonstop from Addis Ababa to Guangzhou, then about an hour by road to Lecong. Foshan has no international airport.
Do Ethiopian passports need a visa for China?
Yes. Apply for an M or L visa before booking; allow about a week including the appointment, and carry the invitation and return ticket.
How does a container reach Addis Ababa?
It lands at Djibouti and moves inland by road or rail. The ocean freight quote is only part of the cost, so ask each forwarder for the full Djibouti-to-Addis figure before you compare suppliers.
Can I pay a Chinese supplier from Ethiopia?
The payment route is the constraint, not the price. Confirm foreign-currency availability with your bank first, then agree the deposit and the balance milestone in writing. A supplier will not hold a production slot for a transfer that may take weeks.
How many days do I need in Foshan?
Four. One day in Lecong, one at the factories, one for samples and the freight conversation, and one for sign-off.
Elsewhere in Africa
Buyers who come to Foshan rarely come alone: a household or a hotel brief often spans two markets.
