In short

  • A Chinese moving company’s June 2025 post cites a client who shipped 15 m³ — sofa, dining table, custom bookshelf — to Dubai in about 40 days, saving roughly AED 6,800 against buying locally. It is an advert, not an audit.
  • A Dubai resident who toured the city’s furniture market in 2024 found international-brand sofas at RMB 50,000–300,000 and mid-market street shops from RMB 2,000 to 50,000, with discounts of 15–40%.
  • She chose to buy locally, because she could not judge the quality of copy furniture shipped from China — the risk inspection is meant to remove.
  • The UAE charges 5% VAT at the time of writing; most goods also carry customs duty of around 5% under the Gulf common tariff. Saudi Arabia’s VAT is 15%. Confirm with your broker.
  • Movers offer “duty-free” declarations for emigrants and students. That generally applies to used household goods, not new furniture.

Furniture from South China usually reaches Dubai by sea through Jebel Ali, and a mover advertising on Xiaohongshu cites about 40 days door-to-door for a 15 m³ household shipment. At the time of writing the UAE charges 5% VAT and, for most goods, customs duty of around 5% of the landed value under the Gulf’s common tariff — confirm with your customs broker. Heat and humidity in transit make packing and timber moisture more important than on cooler routes.

How long does shipping furniture from China to Dubai take, and what does it cost?

Allow roughly six weeks door-to-door after production, and compare the landed cost with Dubai’s mid-market shops rather than its designer showrooms. The clearest figure in our research is a mover’s own example, posted in June 2025: a client shipped 15 m³ including a sofa, a dining table and a custom bookshelf in about 40 days, and saved about AED 6,800 compared with buying in Dubai. The same mover’s posts claim an ordinary sofa costs AED 3,000–5,000 locally. Treat both as marketing — the post does not show the invoice.

A Dubai resident’s 2024 survey of the local market gives a more neutral benchmark. International brands on the beach road priced sofas at RMB 50,000–300,000 and beds at RMB 50,000–150,000. A second street of local, Turkish, Russian and Chinese shops sold sofas from RMB 2,000 to 50,000, with discounts of 15–40%. Shipping from Foshan makes most sense against the first group, or for custom sizes neither group stocks. The complete guide to shipping furniture from China sets out every cost line.

What duty and VAT apply to furniture from China to the UAE?

At the time of writing, 5% VAT, plus customs duty that for most goods is around 5% of the landed value under the Gulf Cooperation Council’s common tariff — confirm with your customs broker. The duty rate depends on how each item is classified; most furniture sits in Chapter 94, explained in our furniture HS code guide. If your goods land in the UAE and move on to another Gulf state, ask your broker how duty is handled between states before booking.

Moving companies on Xiaohongshu offer a template for duty-free clearance of “personal goods” for emigrants and students. Household-goods exemptions are generally designed for used belongings of people relocating, not for new furniture bought from factories. Ask how new goods will be declared and in whose name.

Our view

The most-liked Dubai post in our research comes from a buyer who looked at shipping from China and chose not to — because she could not see the quality of what she would receive. That is the right instinct: in a city where the local mid-market is competitive, importing only pays when someone has checked the goods against a specification before they leave China. Without that, the saving is a gamble.

What about Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Gulf?

The same shipping logic applies, but VAT, product conformity rules and delivery logistics differ by country. Saudi Arabia charges VAT of 15% at the time of writing, and some product categories need conformity certification through its SABER platform before they can clear; ask your broker whether any item on your list is covered. For hotel and villa projects across the region, factor in lead times for fire-rated fabrics and custom finishes as well as freight. One mover’s Gulf advert on Xiaohongshu lists the UAE and Saudi Arabia; for other states, confirm door-to-door coverage before you order.

What does the comment section add?

The Dubai comment threads are short but revealing.

  • High-end brands are local. Asked whether Minotti is sold in Dubai, the author replied that it has stores and multi-brand showrooms in the city — the originals are available locally.
  • Honest reviews draw fire. One commenter accused the author of being paid to criticise a Chinese-run furniture store; she replied that she was simply telling the truth.
  • Exporters are watching. A custom-furniture export company asked the author about cooperation — a reminder that many voices in these threads are selling.

How should furniture be packed for the Gulf heat?

Pack against heat and humidity as well as knocks: moisture-stable timber, sealed wrapping, desiccants and crates for anything fragile. A container on the Gulf route crosses the tropics and can sit in summer heat at the terminal. Solid wood that left the factory with high moisture content can crack or move; condensation can mark finishes and encourage mould. Ask each supplier for kiln-dried timber, allow finishes to cure before packing, and use plywood crates, which fall outside ISPM 15, for glass, stone and fragile pieces. One mover’s post lists pearl foam, corner guards, hardboard and fumigation-free crates for solid-wood furniture. Our export packing guide covers the options, and damage and insurance explains what cover to buy.

How does delivery work in Dubai villas and towers?

Book the building, not just the truck: many towers require a move-in permit and a service-lift slot arranged through building management. Villas are easier, but check gate access for a large vehicle. Movers’ adverts promise delivery into the home, unpacking, simple assembly and removal of packaging; confirm which of these your quote actually includes. If you need custom cabinetry installed, a furniture delivery team is not the same as a fitter — arrange installation separately.

How Source Foshan handles it

For Gulf clients we collect two or three quotes per item against one written specification, including timber moisture and finish requirements. Every supplier’s goods come into our Foshan consolidation warehouse, where each item is inspected, photographed and filmed; you release the balance only after approving the report. We then re-pack to export standard, label by room, book LCL or FCL, and coordinate export documents, customs and door-to-door delivery with loading photos. For villas and hotels we also handle contract furniture sourcing. Our fee is 3–5% of order value, agreed in writing.

Prefer to choose from a ready catalogue?

For Gulf villas and apartments furnished as one project, we recommend Arcaya Living’s whole-home service — design direction, furniture, decor, custom cabinetry, production follow-up, delivery and installation — or its catalogue of more than 10,000 pieces organised by room and style.

FAQ

How long does it take to ship furniture from China to Dubai?

A mover’s example cites about 40 days door-to-door for a 15 m³ household shipment. Add production time, and allow extra for customs holds and building access.

What is the customs duty on furniture imported to the UAE?

For most goods it is around 5% of the landed value under the GCC common tariff, plus 5% VAT, at the time of writing. The exact treatment depends on classification — confirm with a customs broker.

Can I ship new furniture to Dubai duty-free as personal effects?

Generally not. Household-goods exemptions are aimed at used belongings of people relocating. New furniture is normally declared as an import.

Is furniture cheaper to ship from China than to buy in Dubai?

Against designer showrooms, often yes; against Dubai’s mid-market shops with 15–40% discounts, the gap is smaller. Importing pays best for custom sizes and whole-home orders checked before shipping.

Can furniture be shipped from China to Saudi Arabia the same way?

Yes, by sea, but VAT is 15% at the time of writing and some products need SABER conformity certificates. Check your list with a Saudi customs broker first.
