Shipping Foshan furniture to the US and Australia: what two real buyers paid, waited for and checked

Two 2026 buyer records show that Foshan-to-US and Foshan-to-Australia whole-home shipments can be viable. The Sydney buyer reported a landed total at 50–60% of local quotes; the Bay Area buyer reported 30+ days at sea. Treat these as case records, not current freight quotes, and plan three to five months end to end.
How we wrote this (updated with comment threads): we read two detailed shipping diaries from Chinese buyers living in the US and Australia on Xiaohongshu (23 September 2026) and paraphrased their figures. Duty notes are general guidance — confirm your HS codes and rates before you order.
Both ordered in Foshan, waited for production, and paid a forwarder to ship by volume and deliver to the door. The Bay Area buyer went to the forwarder’s office before buying anything, to confirm the process and every fee, and the forwarder then took them round several large factories to agree designs and sizes. Production took one to two months; the goods were checked and collected together, then spent a little over 30 days at sea. Delivery included unpacking, carrying in, placement, assembly and removing all packaging — and a full-length mirror and a sintered-stone dining table arrived intact.
The Sydney buyer ordered remotely: shortlisting factories from real-buyer photos, video-calling into the workshop to pick fabric and leather, adjusting colours to match the floor and curtains, then approving finished-goods photos and video after 30–45 days of production.
The Sydney buyer puts the total — living-room modular sofa, upholstered bed, dining table and chairs, bedside tables, TV unit, freight included — at 50–60% of what local shops quoted. The US buyer does not give a figure but says choice and size flexibility were the main reason to buy in Foshan.

Both buyers did the hard part well: fees agreed before buying, sizes checked against their homes, packaging and assembly arranged. The gap is inspection. A forwarder is paid by the cubic metre and has no reason to reject a sofa; a factory is inspecting its own work. The person who checks your order before the balance is paid should be paid by you — otherwise the first real inspection happens in your living room.
A landed quote adds five things to the factory price: export packing, freight, insurance, duties and taxes, and destination delivery. Ask for each as its own line.
- United States — duties on Chinese-made furniture have changed repeatedly since 2018. US Customs and Border Protection says Section 301 treatment depends on Chinese country of origin and whether the product’s HTS classification is covered. - Australia — the Australian Border Force says consignments over AUD 1,000 require an Import Declaration, while GST on taxable importations is 10% of the value of the taxable importation. ChAFTA preferential treatment requires the appropriate Certificate or Declaration of Origin; it is not automatic. Confirm the tariff line and treatment with a licensed broker. - Access — measure lifts, stairs and doors. The Sydney buyer chose a modular sofa partly so it could come in in pieces.

One Australian forwarder’s advert has more than 1,000 comments — nearly all people asking for a quote to their suburb, which tells you how many households are doing this.
- Los Angeles, 22 m³. A forwarder’s case study: RMB 80,000 of furniture plus RMB 23,000 of LCL freight (pickup, re-packing, clearance, delivery), against at least USD 30,000 quoted locally.
- Los Angeles, 26 m³, 62 pieces. Another case study from the same forwarder: 58 days door to door, no damage. The headline says RMB 37,000 of freight; the breakdown underneath says RMB 45,000+. Read case studies to the last line.
- United Kingdom, 10.8 m³. A buyer used a parcel consolidator that quoted by weight — under RMB 10,000 — then billed by volume on arrival: RMB 30,000–40,000. They moved to a second forwarder at RMB 25,000 for 10.8 m³, still paid RMB 5,000 storage to the first, and paid extra for carrying upstairs.
- Australia, 30 days. A buyer used the factory’s own forwarder, insured the goods for full value, had the bed made to Australian mattress sizes and packed small items inside the furniture crates to share the freight cost.
Comments under shipping posts are overwhelmingly practical questions.
- “By volume or by weight?” — the most common question under the shipping posts. The answer from the posters is always volume, which is why the UK buyer’s weight-based quote went wrong.
- Stuffing crates. A commenter asks whether they can fill the furniture crates with soft furnishings. You can — but everything packed must be on the packing list, or it becomes a customs problem.
- Everyone asks “which forwarder?” Readers in the US ask for names under almost every post; posters rarely answer publicly. A buyer who shipped last month adds that their forwarder crated every piece and nothing broke.
- A reality check on price. A forwarder’s post claims a sofa priced USD 2,600 in New York costs RMB 4,000 bought in Foshan and shipped. Treat single-item comparisons like this with care: they rarely include duties, the buyer’s travel or the fixed cost of a small shipment.
Several forwarder posts promise zero duty by clearing furniture as personal belongings. Exemptions for personal or household effects generally apply to used belongings you already own — not to new furniture bought for a new home. Before accepting a “duty-free” quote, ask your customs broker whether the goods qualify; misdeclared goods can be held, re-assessed or fined, and the risk sits with you as the importer.

How long does it take to ship furniture from Foshan to the US?
For planning, allow three to five months from order to delivery. The Bay Area case in this article reported one to two months of production and 30+ days at sea; consolidation, loading, customs clearance and final delivery add time. Treat a direct port-to-port sailing estimate separately from the end-to-end schedule.
Is it cheaper to buy furniture in Foshan and ship it to Australia?
Often, for a whole home. One Sydney buyer reported paying 50–60% of local quotes including freight. Single pieces rarely justify the fixed costs of shipping and customs.
Do I pay GST on furniture shipped from China to Australia?
For taxable importations, the Australian Border Force applies 10% GST to the value of the taxable importation, and consignments over AUD 1,000 require an Import Declaration. Any ChAFTA preference depends on the tariff line and valid origin documentation, so confirm the treatment with a licensed broker.
Who should inspect furniture before it leaves China?
Someone paid by you, not the factory or the forwarder, and before the balance is paid — so a problem can still be fixed at the factory.
