Buying a sofa from China: styles, frames, prices and shipping

Buying a sofa from China is worth it when you specify what is inside it: the frame timber, the spring type and gauge, the seat-foam density, the cushion filling and the base cloth. Most of the value and most of the risk sit under the upholstery, where a photo cannot show them. Order from a factory against a written spec, ask for photos of the bare frame, have the finished sofa inspected before you pay the balance, and ship it in export packing, ideally with the rest of the room.

Is it worth buying a sofa from China?

Yes, if you are buying the construction rather than the picture: Chinese factories make sofas to almost any size, cover and filling, but the same shape can be built well or badly. Most upholstered furniture sold in China comes from factory clusters around Foshan, and Longjiang in particular is an upholstery town.

The catch is that nothing a buyer usually looks at — colour, silhouette, the showroom photo — tells you what is inside. A Chongqing buyer who posts one of the most-saved sofa checklists on Xiaohongshu puts it bluntly: a sofa is one of the biggest soft-furnishing costs in a home, and a salesperson can make thousands from a buyer who has not done the homework. What should be inside a well-made sofa from China?

A hardwood or metal frame, serpentine springs plus webbing, one-piece high-density seat foam, down-blend back cushions and a durable base cloth. Two buyers’ checklists on Xiaohongshu agree on almost every point; the table combines them.

Density is a trade-off: the Chongqing buyer notes that higher-density foam feels firmer, so she tells readers to sit on samples before choosing. For leather, ask exactly which surfaces are leather — “half-leather” sofas use it only where you sit and lean.

Leather or fabric?

The Chongqing buyer’s rule of thumb is full top-grain leather if the budget allows, and removable fabric covers otherwise, which she rates highly for value and ease of cleaning. The Foshan buyer adds a finer split: cotton-linen for texture, velvet for a softer, dressier look and so-called technology cloth, a coated polyester, for households that want to change or wipe covers often. Which sofa styles do Foshan factories make — and which designs are safe to import?

Almost every current style is made in Foshan, but you should buy original designs or clearly different ones, not copies of protected pieces. The styles overseas buyers ask us about most are Italian minimalist (low, deep, modular, leather or bouclé), mid-century and wabi-sabi (walnut, tan leather, rounded forms) and new Chinese style (solid wood frames with upholstered seats). Many Foshan listings describe sofas as “big-name design” or name them after a famous model. Some well-known sofas are protected by registered designs, copyright in some countries or trade dress, and replicas can infringe those rights and be detained at customs in some markets. That risk falls on the importer, not the factory. Our practice is to steer clients towards a factory’s own designs, towards pieces changed enough to be genuinely different, or towards custom designs from their own designer — and to suggest checking anything close to a known design with a local IP adviser before ordering.

The comment threads are where buyers test the checklists against real quotes.

• Buyers post their spec sheets for a verdict. One reader listed a RMB 6,000 sofa’s larch frame, top-grain leather, 50D foam with down, serpentine springs and webbing; the author said it was fine.
• Elastic webbing passes. Asked whether serpentine springs with elastic webbing were acceptable, the author said yes — the rule is springs plus webbing, not webbing alone.
• “What leather?” comes first. For a RMB 4,100 chenille chaise sofa, the author’s first question was what the cover actually was — the same question we ask on every quote.

How do you specify size and custom options when buying a sofa from China?

Send dimensions for the room, the doorway and the lift, then fix length, seat depth, seat height, arm width and leg height in writing. Factories routinely change size and cover: one Foshan maker’s post offers a 2.8-metre sofa with a 58 cm seat depth and 95 cm overall depth, and says length and colour can be made to order. A commenter under that post asked which length suits a 4.7-metre wall — the kind of question to settle on a floor plan before anyone cuts foam.

• Split or one-piece. A Foshan buyer recommends sofas that come apart into sections because they fit into lifts and up stairs; for export, sections also pack into smaller, safer cartons.
• Leg height. The same buyer suggests about 15 cm of clearance, because robot vacuums are typically 10–14 cm tall.
• Covers. Removable fabric covers are easier to clean and replace; order spare covers and cushions with the sofa.

How much does a sofa from China cost, and what adds to the price?

Factory prices vary too widely to quote a single figure; what buyers post ranges from about RMB 3,500 to RMB 6,000 for mid-market sofas, before export packing, freight and duty. Under the Chongqing buyer’s checklist, readers posted the quotes they were weighing up: one RMB 6,000 leather sofa with a larch frame, 50D foam and down, serpentine springs and webbing; one 3.6-metre chenille chaise sofa at RMB 4,100 with pocket springs in the seat; others at RMB 3,500 and just over RMB 5,000. The maker’s post above answered every one of dozens of price questions by private message only, which is common — ask for a written quote tied to a specification.

For an overseas order the factory price is only one line. Add export cartons and corner protection, inland trucking to a consolidation warehouse, ocean freight (a sofa takes a lot of volume for its weight), customs clearance, duty at your destination and final delivery. How do you check a sofa from China before paying the balance?

Inspect it in the factory, against the specification, before it is packed — and ask for photos of the frame and base while it is still open. The Chongqing buyer tells readers to ask the seller for a photo of the actual internal frame taken in the factory; for an export order we go further and photograph the frame, springs and foam at the white-frame stage, then inspect the finished sofa for dimensions, cover defects, stitching, seam alignment, leg fixing and odour.
