Same name, different sofa: how to judge a curved or modular sofa made in Foshan
Learn how to judge Foshan sofa quality by checking frame construction, foam density, suspension, upholstery, dimensions and design originality before ordering.

To judge a curved or modular sofa from Foshan, verify six points before paying the balance: frame, suspension, foam, upholstery, stitching and module fit. Three are hidden after upholstery, so require bare-frame photos, a written material specification and a full walk-around video of the finished sofa.
How we wrote this (updated with comment threads): we read Xiaohongshu posts on curved and modular sofas (23 September 2026), paraphrased the buyer’s comparison and a maker’s checklist, and added how we verify each point for overseas clients. This is not legal advice on design rights.
Because in Foshan a nickname describes an outline, and dozens of workshops build that outline at different grades. A Foshan maker of curved sofas puts the price gap under one popular name at tens of thousands of RMB, and says cheap versions copy only the surface. A Jiangsu buyer went further: after seeing a famous Italian modular sofa in person, they compared it with Foshan versions from photos and in showrooms, decided the difference was too big to live with, and gave up on the copies.
We think the buyer was right to walk away — but for a second reason too. Protected designs, trade marks and trade dress can create import and IP risk, and the rules differ by destination. We do not source replicas or put third-party brand names on orders. Everything that the photos can’t show. Overall size and each module’s size with a tolerance; seat height and depth; frame materials; suspension type and fixing; seat and back foam densities in kg/m³; cover material with fabric code or leather grade and thickness; the arc radius or a drawing; how modules connect; and the packing standard. Then ask for photos and video at the bare-frame stage — the one moment when curve, frame and fill can still be seen and fixed.

Density (written D28, D35, etc.) is the foam’s weight in kilograms per cubic metre — useful, but not enough on its own. Three sofa makers’ posts on Xiaohongshu, with 480+ comments between them, agree on the basics:
- D-numbers are weight. D28 means 28 kg per m³. Around D28 and above is usually called high density; seats use the densest foam, backs and arms softer grades such as D22.
- High density is not high resilience. A dense foam can still recover slowly. One maker’s rule of thumb: press it, and good seat foam is back in shape within about three seconds.
- Weight can be faked. Some suppliers add filler powder to foam to raise its weight and apparent density; it feels heavy and collapses early.
- Look and smell. Fine, even pores and no powdery residue are good signs; a strong smell points to cheap chemistry or glue between cheap layers.
- “Only quoting 45D or 50D is misleading.” One maker’s point: a good seat combines foams — high-resilience or dense foam in the seat, softer grades in backs and arms, sometimes latex or memory foam — so one number never describes the whole sofa. For export, flame-retardant foam may be required by the destination market.
Readers under the sofa posts ask two questions: how do I test it, and how much is it?
- “Hard to test through the cover.” The most useful comment under the foam guide. It is exactly why the checks belong at the bare-frame and cushion stage, on video, before upholstery.
- Prices are hidden. Under the curved-sofa post, nearly every comment is simply “price?” — including readers in New Zealand and Korea — and every answer is “sent by DM”. Opaque pricing is normal on the platform; it is also why a written quote per specification matters.
- Premium is expected. Asked “isn’t it expensive?”, the maker replies: “a little”. A well-built curved sofa is not a bargain item anywhere.
Ask for densities per part (seat, back, arms) in writing, one cut-through photo of a finished cushion, and — if you are shipping to the UK, California or another market with furniture fire rules — the foam and fabric fire certificates before production. A number on a showroom tag is not a specification.
For upholstery we visit or film the frame before it is covered, check foam against the stated density, compare the fabric or leather with the approved sample, and film each finished piece all the way round before it is packed. How can I tell if a curved sofa is well made?

Are Foshan copies of designer sofas legal to import?
Many famous designs are protected by registered designs, trade marks or trade dress, and copies can be detained at customs. Check with a local adviser; we source original designs rather than replicas.
What foam density should a sofa seat have?
Ask the factory to state seat and back densities in kg/m³ on the order and to use layered foam in the seat. Higher-density, high-resilience foam holds its shape far longer than a single low-density block.
Can I check a sofa’s quality without visiting the factory?
Yes, if you ask for photos and video at the bare-frame stage and a walk-around video of the finished piece before the balance is paid.
What does D28 or D35 mean for sofa foam?
It is the foam’s density in kilograms per cubic metre. Higher numbers are denser, but density alone does not guarantee resilience — ask for densities per part and look for quick rebound.
