Is Buying Furniture from China Worth It for an Australian or New Zealand Home?

Buying from China is worth comparing when the furniture fits your home, the complete delivered cost works and the order has clear owners. Decide whether to travel separately.

THE SOURCING JOURNAL / BUYER GUIDE

In this guide

Buying furniture from China can be worthwhile for an Australian or New Zealand home when three conditions are met: the specified products fit your home, the complete delivered cost compares favourably with a local offer, and the work from ordering to installation has named owners. A lower showroom price alone does not establish a saving.

Decide whether to import before deciding whether to visit Foshan. A room package may work financially with remote sourcing; a visit may be useful only for comfort, materials or other choices you cannot settle adequately at home. Use the comparison below to separate those decisions.

Start with the home you are furnishing

Build one room list that you can send to both local retailers and overseas suppliers. It does not need to be a finished design document. It needs to show what you intend to buy and what would make each item acceptable. Record quantity, dimensions, materials, finish, upholstery, hardware and any installation constraints. Give every item a short code, such as LIV-S01 for the living-room sofa.

Separate essential pieces from optional purchases. A bed needed for move-in has a different deadline from an occasional chair that can arrive later. Custom cabinetry also needs a different approval process from a freestanding table. Treating all three as one shopping basket can hide the item most likely to control the schedule. Before costing a small order, confirm minimum quantities for the exact models and finishes.

For each local offer, record whether the price includes delivery, stairs, assembly, removal of packaging and a local remedy if something is wrong. Ask the overseas seller for the equivalent scope. Similar photographs do not establish equivalent frame construction, fabric, hardware or support after delivery.

Compare local buying, remote sourcing and a Foshan visit

Compare all three routes against one item schedule and one final handover: the agreed furniture placed in the rooms with the specified assembly or installation complete. If the overseas quote ends at a port and the local quote ends in your room, the offers have different scopes. Price the remaining work before comparing their totals.

Mark every amount as a written quote, a planning estimate or unquoted. An empty freight, inspection or installation cell is not zero. Keep the date, currency and validity beside each offer. The landed-cost examples и local-retail comparison worksheet provide a more detailed structure.

Understand what changes the Australian or New Zealand total

Furniture price, packing volume, freight, destination handling and residential access can all change the comparison. Ask for packed dimensions rather than using the furniture’s display dimensions as shipping volume. Several suppliers may require consolidation, handling and storage before shipment; find out who quotes and coordinates those services.

Import tax also belongs in the budget. Australian Border Force guidance explains that import GST is generally 10% of the taxable import value, which includes customs value, applicable duty and relevant international transport and insurance. New Zealand Customs guidance explains the 15% GST calculation using the value of the goods, international freight and insurance, plus applicable duty. These percentages do not establish your customs classification or a duty exemption.

Have the broker confirm the calculation for the actual goods, importer and shipment. A private household should not assume a business tax credit. Ask separately about material-related import requirements, wood packaging, destination charges and any inspection or treatment costs. The Australia delivery guide и New Zealand shipping guide explain the information needed for those checks.

What would travelling let you decide?

A useful buying trip resolves choices that are difficult or expensive to settle another way. Sitting on shortlisted sofas, comparing fabrics together or reviewing full-size finishes may justify a visit. Browsing without a brief can produce many photographs while leaving dimensions, material specifications and final prices unanswered.

For each proposed visit, name the decision it must resolve. Trying two shortlisted sofa seat depths can answer a comfort question. Reviewing a cabinetry finish can answer a material question. Neither activity verifies site dimensions or approves the final drawing. Carry those unresolved tasks into the order record.

The published New Zealand whole-home visit shows this type of work across a reclining sofa, lighting, cabinetry and material boards. It documents a selection process; it is not evidence of a completed delivery or a percentage saving. Use the tasks as planning examples and decide which matter for your own home.

If physical experience adds little to your remaining decisions, compare the trip cost with a remote process using samples, video calls and written approvals. A hybrid approach can also work: visit to select, then complete drawings, production checks and shipment approvals remotely.

When importing or travelling may be a poor fit

An urgent single replacement deserves an especially careful comparison. Fixed shipping and handling work may outweigh a product-price difference, while a local stock item may solve the immediate need. Neither conclusion is automatic: obtain the actual delivered offers and availability.

A fixed move-in date can also change the decision. Work backwards through specification approval, production, inspection, corrections, consolidation, shipping, clearance and installation. If the plan has no room for an unresolved drawing or a missed delivery appointment, identify which essentials should be sourced locally or ordered separately.

Importing custom items is harder when nobody at the destination can verify measurements, receive the goods or install them. A sourcing visit cannot check your Australian or New Zealand doorway, staircase, plumbing or site readiness. Assign those tasks before placing an order.

Choose the buying route that matches the work you can manage. If nobody can reconcile quotation revisions, approve drawings and organise receiving, obtain a written service scope for those tasks before committing. A visit does not transfer those responsibilities automatically.

Test the decision without inventing a saving

Consider an illustrative homeowner comparing a sofa, dining set, beds and fitted storage. The local quotation includes room delivery and assembly. The overseas quotation covers products and international freight, but destination handling and cabinetry installation remain unquoted. It is too early to call the difference a saving.

The next useful actions are to match the specifications, price the missing work and confirm the cabinetry measurements. Only then should the buyer compare remote sourcing with a visit. If trying the sofa is the only unresolved physical choice, that may be addressed through a focused visit or a different product selection; it does not justify assuming every room needs an overseas trip.

Run one more scenario using plausible changes supplied by the actual providers: different packing, an additional inspection, a revised delivery scope or a later installation date. Record the additional cost separately. This is a sensitivity check, not a prediction that something will go wrong.

Before you book flights

  • Use one item schedule for local and overseas quotations.
  • Identify which products need physical trials and which can be approved from samples or drawings.
  • Confirm the people responsible for site measurements, import arrangements, receiving and installation.
  • Ask for packed-volume estimates, then plan to replace them with confirmed packing data.
  • Keep unquoted costs and unresolved delivery dates visible.
  • Choose the showroom visits that would settle a named decision.
  • Agree what happens after you return home, including changes, inspections and shipment release.

If these points are still open, the next step is usually a better brief or quote comparison. If they are sufficiently clear, use the three-day and five-day itinerary guide to build a visit around the decisions that remain.

Вопросы покупателей

Is buying furniture from China always cheaper?

No. The result depends on matched specifications, order size, service scope, freight, import charges and destination work. Compare current offers for your own home rather than applying a general saving percentage.

Do I need to visit Foshan to import furniture?

No. Some choices can be managed with samples, measured drawings, live calls and agreed inspections. A visit is most useful when physical comparison resolves decisions that those methods cannot settle adequately.

Should flights be included in the furniture budget?

Include the costs you incur because of the buying trip. If the trip also serves another purpose, show how you allocate those costs rather than silently excluding them. Compare your time commitment as well as cash.

Is a whole-home order automatically worthwhile?

No. A larger order can spread some fixed costs, but it can also add suppliers, specifications, installation work and packing volume. The full project comparison is still necessary.
