En resumen

  • A Wenzhou forwarder’s standard for oversized export crates: 10 cm feet so a forklift can enter from every side, a hinged, latched lid customs can open, and export-grade composite board.
  • A buyer shipping to Malaysia crated everything from Foshan — 2,200 kg, including a kitchen island of about 1,000 kg — and paid nearly RM 6,000 in freight; nothing broke.
  • A Perth buyer paid about RMB 2,000 for re-crating and marine insurance in 2026 — and still found almost everything except the dining chairs damaged.
  • NIMF 15 applies to wood packaging (crates, pallets, frames), not to the furniture itself; plywood and particleboard are exempt.

Furniture for sea freight needs more than retail packing: foam and corner guards inside a strong carton for upholstery and light pieces, a slatted wooden frame for cabinets and tables, and a full crate for stone, glass, ceramics and anything over a few hundred kilos. Solid-wood crates and pallets must meet ISPM 15; plywood crates are outside it. Export packing is rarely included in a factory price, so write it into the order — or have it done at the consolidation warehouse — and check it in photos before loading.

What export packing does each type of furniture need?

Match the packing to the weight, the fragility and how the piece will be handled — not to what the factory uses for local delivery.

Elemento Typical export packing Por qué
Sofas, upholstered beds, chairs Film, foam, corner guards, double-wall carton; frame if stacked in LCL Light but easily crushed and soiled
Cabinets, sideboards, wardrobes Foam and corner guards in a carton, inside a slatted wooden frame Corners and doors take the knocks
Stone, sintered-stone or glass tops Full crate, top standing on edge or in an A-frame Slabs crack if laid flat and flexed
Kitchen islands, heavy stone pieces Full crate on skids with forklift access Needs mechanical handling at both ends

A buyer who ordered sintered stone was reassured under one post that, packed properly, such tables usually arrive intact — typically in a wooden crate or a triangular A-frame. The guía completa para enviar muebles desde China shows where packing sits among the other steps.

Carton, wooden frame or full crate: which is right?

A carton protects surfaces, a wooden frame protects against crushing, and a full crate protects against both — at a cost in volume and money. A slatted frame (the “wooden rack” Chinese forwarders offer) adds a few centimetres per side and lets handlers see what is inside; a closed crate adds more and hides it. Both increase the cubic metres you pay freight on, which is why buyers should not crate an entire order by default. Plan the volume with cuántos muebles entran en un contenedor.

The Malaysia buyer chose the maximum: every package framed and her kitchen island in a full crate, because her shipment had no insurance and she was carrying the risk herself. It arrived without damage.

Nuestra opinión

Buyers argue about cartons versus crates; the better question is who sees the packing before the container is sealed. A crate you have seen in a photo, with its contents blocked and its label matching the packing list, is worth more than any packing standard written in an advert. Ask for packing photos at the factory and loading photos at the warehouse, every time.

Does a furniture shipping crate need ISPM 15?

Yes, if it is made of solid wood: ISPM 15 requires wood packaging to be heat-treated or fumigated and stamped — but it applies to the crate, not the furniture. Plywood, particleboard, OSB and other processed wood fall outside the rule, which is why forwarders advertise “fumigation-free” crates. The Wenzhou forwarder’s standard specifies export-grade composite board for exactly this reason. The furniture itself is treated under each destination’s own rules; New Zealand and Australia, for example, may inspect timber furniture for pests regardless of the crate. Confirm requirements with your forwarder or customs broker.

¿Qué aportan los comentarios?

The 200-plus comments under the Perth post are a catalogue of what goes wrong — and a few voices of reassurance.

  • Stacking beats crating. One commenter paid to close her frames into full crates and still had breakage — blinds placed at the bottom of the load, cabinets on top.
  • Warehouse addresses attract seconds. The same commenter says some makers, seeing a forwarder’s warehouse address, ship flawed goods knowing they are hard to return.
  • Local is not risk-free either. A reader who decided to buy in Australia instead was told by the author that her own locally bought designer sofa had arrived after three months with half its fabric stained black by the container.

What makes a good export crate?

Feet for a forklift, a lid customs can open without destroying it, and contents that cannot move. The Wenzhou forwarder’s three rules for oversized crates are a useful minimum: 10 cm feet under the base so a forklift can enter from every side; a hinged top closed with removable latches so customs can open and re-close it; and composite board suitable for export. We would add internal blocking, stone tops on edge, “no stack” marks and labels that match the packing list; our lista de verificación de inspección includes packing checks.

Weight matters at the far end too. The Malaysia buyer’s island weighed about a tonne on its own; she asked the local carrier for a tailgate lorry and a pallet jack, the driver forgot the jack, and four workers from her renovation contractor unloaded it by hand.

Who pays for export packing — the factory, the forwarder or you?

You do, one way or another: either as a line in the factory order or as a charge from the forwarder’s warehouse, usually priced by the cubic metre. Factory packing is often designed for domestic delivery — film, foam and a thin carton. Write the export standard into the order, with photos of the packed piece required before the goods leave the factory. Otherwise the warehouse re-packs on arrival, often at a per-metre rate — the approach our servicio de envío y consolidación uses for pieces that arrive under-packed. The Perth buyer paid about RMB 2,000 for full re-crating and marine insurance; after her losses, the replacement pieces came far better packed: a carton inside a larger wooden frame, with many more fragile labels.

Why does good packing still fail?

Because packing is only one of three causes — the others are how the container is stacked and how it is unloaded. The Perth buyer’s post, with more than 200 comments, is the clearest example: everything except the dining chairs arrived damaged despite paid crating, and months later the blame was split between unloading and product quality. One commenter who had also paid for extra crating described blinds loaded at the bottom with cabinets on top. The fixes are a loading plan with heavy crates low, photos of each layer during loading, and insurance. Our guide to damage in transit, insurance and claims covers what to do when it goes wrong.

Cómo lo gestiona Source Foshan

We specify export packing in the order and check it before goods leave the factory. In our Foshan consolidation warehouse every item is inspected against the confirmed specification, then re-packed to export standard — foam and corner guards, frames or crates where the piece needs them — and each carton is labelled by room. You see the photo and video report before releasing the balance, and loading photos when the container is packed. We then coordinate export documents, customs and door-to-door delivery.

¿Prefiere elegir de un catálogo ya preparado?

If you would rather buy pieces whose export packing is part of a documented process, we recommend Arcaya Living: its five-stage quality process runs from material confirmation to export packing, with inspection, packing and loading photos for project orders.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is the best packing for shipping furniture overseas?

Foam, corner guards and a strong carton for upholstery; a slatted wooden frame for cabinets and tables; and a full crate for stone, glass and heavy pieces. Match the packing to the item, not to the factory’s default.

Do furniture shipping crates need to be ISPM 15 certified?

Solid-wood crates and pallets must be ISPM 15-treated and stamped. Plywood and other processed-wood crates are exempt, which is why many forwarders use them.

How much does a wooden crate for furniture cost?

Forwarders usually charge by the cubic metre. One Perth buyer paid about RMB 2,000 for re-crating and marine insurance on a household order in 2026; crates also add volume to your freight.

Should every piece of furniture be crated?

No. Crating adds cost and volume. Crate stone, glass, ceramics and heavy pieces; frame cabinets and tables; carton and wrap upholstery.

Who is responsible for export packing?

Whoever you write it into the contract with. Specify export packing in the factory order with photos before dispatch, or pay the consolidation warehouse to re-pack on arrival.
