- Martindale (UK/EU) and Wyzenbeek double rubs (US) are different abrasion tests; compare like with like.
- Rub count is not pilling: a Xiaohongshu fabric guide warns that low-grade chenille can pill after long friction even though chenille is generally hard-wearing.
- That guide (1,389 likes) sorts sofa fabrics into nine families, from chenille and cotton-linen to “tech cloth” and sherpa.
- A cat owner’s chenille sofa survived three months of jumping without snags — but a commenter warns cat urine goes far deeper than the surface.
- Hotels, offices and restaurants need higher counts than homes; agree the figure with your specifier.
A rub count measures how many abrasion cycles a fabric survives before it wears through: Martindale cycles in the UK and Europe, Wyzenbeek double rubs in the US. The two are different tests and do not convert neatly, and neither measures pilling, which has its own test. For a sofa from China, ask for the fabric’s code and its abrasion, pilling and colour-fastness results, and remember that commercial use needs higher counts than a home.
What is a rub count, and how do Martindale and Wyzenbeek differ?
Both rub a fabric against an abrasive until it shows wear; Martindale moves in a figure-of-eight pattern and is quoted in cycles, Wyzenbeek rubs back and forth and is quoted in double rubs. UK and European suppliers usually quote Martindale; US specifiers usually ask for Wyzenbeek. The numbers are not interchangeable, so a Chinese mill’s “Martindale” figure cannot simply be converted for a US spec sheet — ask which test, which standard and which lab.
| Тестирование | Where it is used | What it tells you | What it does not |
|---|---|---|---|
| Martindale abrasion | UK, EU, much of Asia | Cycles before wear-through | Pilling, fading, snagging |
| Wyzenbeek double rubs | US | Double rubs before wear | Same |
| Pilling test | Widely used | How much the surface bobbles, graded on a scale | Abrasion life |
| Colour-fastness to rubbing | Widely used | Whether dye transfers to clothes | Durability |
We do not quote threshold numbers here because domestic and contract bands vary by market and specifier; commercial use needs higher counts. Agree the figure in writing with your designer or client.
Which Chinese sofa fabrics are the most durable?
The name tells you the look, not the performance — two “chenille” fabrics can differ widely, so ask for test results by fabric code. A Guangdong furniture explainer (1,389 likes) sorts sofa fabrics into nine families; the English below is how they usually appear in quotes:
- Chenille: soft short pile, described as stronger than ordinary velvet; picks up dust and pet hair, and low-grade chenille can pill.
- Cotton-linen and linen: breathable, deliberately creased look; can feel rough at first.
- “Frosted” fabric (mosha bu): a matt microfibre between velvet and tech cloth, sold as wear- and stain-resistant.
- Suede-effect, corduroy, teddy and sherpa: texture-led fabrics; check pilling and pile loss.
- “Tech cloth” (keji bu): a coated synthetic that looks like leather and is marketed as water-, stain- and wear-resistant.
A Hunan buyer (810 likes) chose a multi-yarn chenille for being soft, hard-wearing and resistant to pilling, and removable covers because of children. Fabric weight per square metre is another figure worth putting in the spec.

Chinese fabric names are aesthetic categories; rub counts are engineering numbers; and many showrooms sell on the first and rarely volunteer the second. For a sofa that has to last abroad, the fabric code is the product — the name on the swatch card is just the mood. Ask for the code, the test method and the results before you choose a colour.
Is a performance fabric sofa worth it for pets and children?
Often yes, but “performance” is a claim to test, and covers you can remove and wash matter as much as the weave. A cat owner in Sichuan (1,083 likes) reports that after three months her chenille sofa had no snags, spills wiped up, and every cover — seat, arms, cushions — went in the washing machine without shrinking. The most useful comment under her post is a warning: cat urine soaks into foam, not just fabric, so pet owners should consider a waterproof layer.
For a buyer abroad, ask the supplier to put in writing: the fabric code, abrasion result and test method, pilling grade, whether covers are removable and washable (and at what temperature), and whether the fabric shrinks after washing. Then approve a swatch and keep half. Fire rules may change the fabric — some need a back-coating or interliner to pass — so check правилам пожарной безопасности для мягкой мебели before you fall in love with a swatch.

Что добавляют комментарии?
The comments under the fabric posts are mostly buyers trying to identify swatches — with a few useful warnings.
- Identification by photo is guesswork. Readers posted swatches asking what they were; replies ranged from short teddy to cotton-linen to tech cloth.
- Price hints at the fabric. One reply says a similar look is nubuck leather if the sofa is expensive, or “frosted” fabric at around RMB 10,000.
- Chenille or frosted fabric? Asked to choose between the two, replies in the thread twice preferred frosted fabric.
- Pets divide opinion. One owner says the same fabric resists claws and hides dirt; another says no fabric survives a cat that pees on it.
What else decides whether a fabric sofa lasts?
The frame, the foam and the details under the fabric. The Hunan buyer’s checklist is a good template: a solid-wood frame (hers is birch with pine), seat depth over 60 cm with cushions, 35D high-resilience foam that is medium-firm, a slight backrest angle, removable covers and legs taller than 11 cm so a robot vacuum fits. Her own sofa stands on 14 cm legs.

How do you check upholstery fabric on delivery?
Compare it with your retained swatch in daylight, then check seams, pattern alignment and cover fit. Look for colour difference between cushions cut from different rolls, pulled threads, uneven piping and zips that bind. Remove one cover and put it back to check fit. The full routine is in проверку мебели при доставке.
Как с этим работает Source Foshan
For fabric sofas we write the fabric code, supplier, weight and the abrasion, pilling and colour-fastness results — with the test method — into the specification, alongside frame, foam density and cover details. We compare two or three quotes on that basis and keep a retained swatch. During production we send weekly photos and video; before loading, every piece is checked against the swatch and the spec, and you approve the photo and video report before the balance is released.
If you would rather choose from fabric sofas and chairs already specified, we recommend Arcaya Living’s upholstered collections, organised by room and style.

Часто задаваемые вопросы
What is a good rub count for a sofa?
It depends on the test and the use: domestic and contract bands differ, and Martindale and Wyzenbeek numbers are not interchangeable. Agree the figure with your specifier and ask for the lab result.
What is the Martindale rub test?
A test that rubs fabric in a figure-of-eight pattern against a standard abrasive and counts the cycles until wear shows. It is widely used in the UK and Europe.
Does a high rub count mean a fabric won't pill?
No. Pilling is tested separately and graded on its own scale; ask for both results.
Is chenille good for a sofa with pets?
Many owners find it hides wear and resists claws, but it attracts hair and low grades can pill. Removable covers and a waterproof layer help.

Choosing a fabric for sofas or contract seating?
Send us the swatches or fabric codes you like. We ask the mills for the test results and put fabric, foam and frame into one specification you can compare.
