Кратко

  • The most-liked post in the research (about 8,100 likes) sums up the Song-inspired look as solid wood, low-saturation colours, empty space and a few natural materials.
  • Its example pieces use oak, black walnut and rattan, with a wardrobe built from wide walnut boards joined edge to edge to keep the grain continuous.
  • The most-liked comment under it (33 likes) says the photos look like screenshots from a home-design game — many style images are renders, not real rooms.
  • A designer’s post rejects carved rosewood in favour of exposed timber beams, timber grilles, stone table legs and paper lanterns.
  • A bedroom guide recommends off-white, pale yellow and light grey as the base, with dark wood or deep blue for contrast and symmetrical layouts.

New Chinese-style furniture is a modern, pared-back take on classical Chinese design: straight lines, solid walnut or oak, rattan, linen and stone, in muted colours, rather than heavy carved rosewood. It is made by Chinese furniture brands, design studios and Foshan factories. When importing it, confirm the timber species and whether it is solid or veneer, check paperwork for any protected woods and for packing timber, and choose original designs rather than copies of contemporary brands’ pieces.

What is new Chinese-style furniture?

It is contemporary furniture that borrows the proportions, joinery and calm of classical Chinese design — especially the Song and Ming periods — without the heavy carving, dark lacquer and ornament of traditional pieces. Chinese homeowners call it new Chinese style, and in the last few years its most popular form on Xiaohongshu has been a Song-inspired look. A widely saved post by a solid-wood furniture brand describes it in three rules: leave space empty, keep to soft colours such as off-white, wood, light grey and celadon, and use only natural materials — solid wood, cotton-linen, celadon and coarse pottery.

A designer’s post makes the contrast with traditional furniture explicit: no carved rosewood, but timber ceiling beams, see-through timber grilles, stone table legs, upholstered chairs on wooden frames and paper lanterns. A bedroom guide adds symmetry, straight lines and an ink-painting or panelled wall behind the bed. The style mixes easily with mid-century and wabi-sabi pieces, and the upholstered seating uses the same construction as any sofa — see our руководство по покупке дивана в Китае.

Which woods and materials are used in new Chinese furniture — and which need paperwork?

Mostly walnut, oak, ash and elm, with rattan, linen, stone and ceramics; traditional rosewoods are rarer in the new style and can require CITES paperwork. The brand post’s example pieces show the typical range: an oak bed with a plain upholstered headboard, a walnut dressing table with rattan panels, and a walnut wardrobe made from wide boards joined edge to edge so the grain runs continuously.

Материал Что спросить
Walnut, oak, ash Solid or veneer; board width; grade (for example FAS for North American hardwoods); moisture content
Rosewood / hongmu species Exact botanical species; whether CITES permits are needed for export and import
Rattan and cane Natural or synthetic; treatment against insects and mould
Камень Natural or sintered; thickness; fixing
Linen and silk textiles Composition, shrinkage and colour-fastness

Several rosewood species used in classical Chinese furniture are listed under CITES, and shipments containing them can need permits at both ends; ask for the species name and check with your broker before ordering. New Chinese style is sold abroad almost entirely through images, and many of those images were never photographs. For this style above all, ask to see the real piece in daylight before you pay a deposit — a render cannot show you the timber. The quality of new Chinese furniture is in its wood and joinery, which is also where cheaper versions save money.

Who makes new Chinese-style furniture, and are the photos real?

National furniture brands, independent design studios and Foshan factories all make it — and many of the images you will see are 3D renders rather than photographs. Under the most-liked post in our research, the top comment says the pictures look like screenshots from a home-building game, and another asks why they look like 3D models. The designer’s post is tagged as renderings, and the bedroom guide’s images are design visuals too.

Renders are a fair way to show a style, but they are not a product. Before ordering, ask the maker for:

  • unretouched photos or a video of the actual piece, in daylight;
  • close-ups of joints, edges and the back and underside;
  • a finish sample in the real timber and stain;
  • dimensions and weights from the production drawing.

New Chinese dining tables and chairs are a common first order; our dining tables from Foshan guide covers tops and bases, and rugs, lighting and curtains covers the paper lanterns, linen and rugs that complete the look.

The comments under the style posts are brief but pointed.

  • “It looks like a game.” The most-liked comment (33 likes) under the brand’s post says the images look like screenshots from a home-building game; another reader asks why they look like 3D models.
  • Materials questioned. Under the designer’s post, readers asked whether the desk base was real stone — the kind of question renders cannot answer.
  • Full-service interest. One reader asked whether the designer could take on a whole project, showing demand for design plus furniture, not furniture alone.

Traditional forms, contemporary designs and copies: what is safe to import?

Centuries-old classical forms are generally part of the shared tradition, but contemporary new Chinese designs by brands and studios can be protected, and close copies of them carry the same risks as any replica. A round-backed chair or a plain Ming-style table is a type, not one company’s design. A specific modern interpretation — a particular brand’s bed, cabinet or chair — can be protected by registered designs, copyright or trade dress in some markets, and replicas can be detained at customs.

Our advice is to choose a maker’s own design, commission an original from your designer through our сервис изготовления мебели на заказ, or pick pieces that are clearly different from any branded collection. If a piece is close to a known contemporary design, check with a local IP adviser before ordering. Avoid listings that borrow a brand’s name or product codes to sell a similar item.

How does solid-wood Chinese-style furniture ship?

In export cartons or crates, with timber dried for the destination climate, packing timber treated to ISPM 15 and, for some countries, extra biosecurity checks on wood and rattan. Solid walnut and oak move with humidity: a wide-board wardrobe dried for humid southern China can open joints in a dry, heated home. Ask the factory what moisture content the timber is dried to and whether it can match your climate.

A wide solid-walnut chest of drawers: boards this wide move with humidity, so ask what moisture content the timber was dried to for your climate.

Как с этим работает Source Foshan

For new Chinese-style furniture we confirm the timber species, solid or veneer construction, board widths, moisture content and finish for each piece, and compare two or three quotes against that specification from Foshan makers. You see real photos of options and the signed-off specification, weekly production photos and video, and a pre-loading inspection report; the balance is released only after you approve it. We coordinate export documents with the freight side and consolidate timber pieces with the rest of your order in our Foshan warehouse.
