cost-effective, hard-wearing and quick to produce, she writes, but <b>cannot be shaped and is hard to repair<\/b> after a knock.<\/li>\n<li>Veneer over a stable board is often the <b>better engineering choice<\/b> for large panels; the problem is only when it is sold as solid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"answer\"><strong>Solid wood means every listed part is cut from timber; veneer is a thin slice of real wood glued over a board such as MDF, particleboard or plywood; MDF is a board made from wood fibres and resin. The drawers she opened were solid, so she did not look further. At home the strong smell made her search Xiaohongshu for checks; pulling back the leather-wrapped edges she found veneered MDF under the wrap and in the drawer bottoms. Only three sides of each drawer were solid.<\/p>\n<p>When she went back, the seller said only the drawers had been described as solid and accused her of splitting hairs. That exchange is the whole lesson: a spoken \u201csolid wood\u201d covers whatever the seller later says it covered. That is what makes the word dangerous. For an overseas buyer, <b>\u201csolid wood\u201d is not a material; it is a claim that has to be broken into parts before anyone pays for it.<\/b> We would rather buy an honestly described veneered piece than a \u201csolid\u201d one nobody will put in writing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"is-veneer-or-mdf-furniture-from-china-worth-buying\">Is veneer or MDF furniture from China worth buying?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Yes, when it is sold as what it is and the board and finish are specified.<\/strong> A Zhejiang guide to cabinetry finishes lists four common faces: melamine (the \u201cno-paint board\u201d), PET film, lacquer (primed, baked and polished \u2014 the most laborious) and real-wood veneer for buyers who want natural grain. Her notes on melamine are balanced: good value, wear-resistant, many patterns and short lead times, but it cannot be shaped, is hard to repair after a knock, and edge-banding quality varies.<\/p>\n<p>For wide dining tops and tall wardrobe doors, veneer on a stable core can outperform solid timber, which moves with humidity \u2014 something a buyer shipping to a dry, heated home should weigh.
