A \u00a55,000 factory sofa becomes \u00a515,000\u201320,000 by the time it has passed through a national agent, a provincial agent, a dealer and a mall \u2014 two to three times the making cost, before any &#8220;Italian design&#8221; label doubles it again.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Value for money is value divided by price, not a low price. Two sofas that look identical in a photo can differ in frame timber, foam density, hide layer and spring construction \u2014 invisible for two years, obvious in five.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Foshan&#8217;s advantage is not corner-cutting but a supply chain where every component of a sofa is made within 50 km, by craftsmen who have done it for decades, in the town that sets the country&#8217;s styles.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Five hard indicators beat any brand: frame material, filling density, cover grade, hardware brand, and a written warranty (frame 10 years, foam 5, cover 3).<\/li>\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Factory direct&#8221; has its own four traps \u2014 resellers posing as factories, bait prices with swapped materials, no after-sales, and freight\/stairs\/assembly billed later. This SOP puts a check and a Source Foshan control on every step.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A sofa that costs \u00a530,000 in a showroom and \u00a58,000 from a factory is not always the same sofa \u2014 and when it is, you have just seen where your money goes.<\/strong> A Foshan furniture wholesaler published a plain-spoken buyer&#8217;s guide to &#8220;factory direct&#8221; for Chinese consumers: the value formula, the six-layer channel mark-up, why Foshan, five indicators to judge any piece, and the traps that make &#8220;factory direct&#8221; a lottery. We have translated it into a step-by-step SOP for an overseas buyer, kept every number, and been blunt about the traps \u2014 because there are more of them from 8,000 km away \u2014 with the control we apply at each step. Source Foshan is a sourcing agent based in Foshan, China, and this is the sequence we run on every factory-direct order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sf-source-note\">Based on a buyer&#8217;s guide published in September 2026 by a Foshan furniture wholesale operator, translated and restructured as an SOP by Source Foshan. Channel mark-up figures are the author&#8217;s worked example; the five indicators and four traps are theirs; the overseas controls are ours. RMB at \u00a57.1 to the USD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step-0\">Step 0 \u00b7 Fix what &#8220;value for money&#8221; means before you look at a price<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most buyers define value as cheap: bed A is \u00a55,000, bed B is \u00a53,000, so B is better value. The assumption hiding in that sentence is that the two beds are the same \u2014 and in furniture, nine times in ten, they are not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two leather sofas, identical in photographs. One: full-grain hide, imported pine frame, high-resilience foam, serpentine springs over webbing. The other: split leather laminated to look like top-grain, MDF frame, ordinary foam, a single layer of webbing. You cannot tell them apart in a picture or in a five-second sit. In year three, five and ten, one is still comfortable and the other is a hollow. <strong>Value for money is value \u00f7 price<\/strong> \u2014 materials, construction, durability and comfort on top; what you paid underneath. Each takes 20\u201330%. Six layers roughly triple the price before the mall adds its rent, fit-out, sales staff and advertising. The difference: those lines are visible and negotiable. The question is never &#8220;expensive or cheap?&#8221; but <em>&#8220;can I find a channel that removes the water without removing the quality?&#8221;<\/em> That is why informed buyers go to Foshan factories \u2014 and why the traps in Step 5 exist. Who is actually selling to you online is mapped in <a href=\"\/nl\/blog\/who-sells-foshan-furniture-online\/\">six business models behind &#8220;we are the source factory&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sf-map\">\n  <div><span><b>The trap here<\/b>Comparing a mall ticket with a &#8220;factory price&#8221; that has quietly swapped the materials<\/span><i>\u2192<\/i><span><b>Source Foshan control<\/b>We compare like with like: the same written spec quoted by two or three factories, and we tell you which of Foshan&#8217;s <a href=\"\/nl\/blog\/foshan-sofa-factory-price-vs-mall-price\/\">ten price grades<\/a> each quote sits in.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step-2\">Step 2 \u00b7 Know why the answer is Foshan \u2014 and why that is not the same as &#8220;any Foshan seller&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China has many furniture towns; one is called the furniture capital, and it is Foshan \u2014 specifically Shunde&#8217;s Lecong and Longjiang. Materials for a sofa that would take a tour of several cities elsewhere arrive the same day here. Many well-known brands are made in Foshan on the same lines by the same hands; the logo multiplies the price by five.<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n  <li><svg viewbox=\"0 0 48 48\" fill=\"none\" stroke=\"currentColor\" stroke-width=\"2.2\" stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M8 34l10-12 8 8 6-6 8 10\"\/><rect x=\"6\" y=\"8\" width=\"36\" height=\"32\" rx=\"3\"\/><\/svg><div><b>The country&#8217;s style bellwether<\/b><p>What is fashionable next year appears in Foshan first; the &#8220;designer pieces&#8221; you see online usually trace back here.<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n  <li><svg viewbox=\"0 0 48 48\" fill=\"none\" stroke=\"currentColor\" stroke-width=\"2.2\" stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M24 6 4 40h40L24 6z\"\/><path d=\"M24 18v11\"\/><circle cx=\"24\" cy=\"34\" r=\"1.4\" fill=\"currentColor\"\/><\/svg><div><b>The trap here<\/b><p>Foshan&#8217;s value comes from cluster efficiency, not corner-cutting \u2014 but the same cluster also hosts tens of thousands of resellers and marketing teams who borrow the word &#8220;factory&#8221;. &#8220;It is in Foshan&#8221; is where the due diligence starts, not where it ends.<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sf-map\">\n  <div><span><b>The trap here<\/b>Treating &#8220;Foshan&#8221; as a quality mark<\/span><i>\u2192<\/i><span><b>Source Foshan control<\/b>Every supplier on our shortlist has a checked licence, a visited address and a stated status \u2014 maker or dealer. Check these five and you will choose better than most of the trade&#8217;s customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"sf-checks\">\n  <li><b>Frame material \u2014 decides how many years it lasts.<\/b> Good: solid wood, ideally imported pine, oak or beech. Poor: MDF, particleboard, plywood or joined offcuts. <em>Test:<\/em> lift it \u2014 a solid-frame sofa is heavy for two people; a board one, a single person can carry. Then lift the dust cover underneath and look.<small>Trap: &#8220;solid wood frame&#8221; on a listing with no species. Our PI names the species and the board grade, with a frame-stage photo.<\/small><\/li>\n  <li><b>Filling \u2014 decides how it feels in year five.<\/b> High-resilience foam, at least 40D (40 kg\/m\u00b3), springs back fast and holds for a decade; low-density or recycled foam is a dent in two years. <em>Test:<\/em> press hard, release; if it does not recover quickly, walk away.<small>Trap: &#8220;45D&#8221; with no brand \u2014 two 45Ds can differ widely. We record density per layer and the foam maker, and photograph the bare seat.<\/small><\/li>\n  <li><b>Cover \u2014 decides how it wears.<\/b> Leather grades in descending order: full-grain > semi-aniline > embossed > split > microfibre > PU. Fabric: the denser the weave, the harder-wearing. <em>Test:<\/em> rub the fabric \u2014 pilling is a no; scratch it \u2014 snagging is a no.<small>Trap: &#8220;genuine leather&#8221; (\u771f\u76ae) legally covering bonded hides. We write grade, thickness in mm and covered surfaces, and check the hide back at inspection.<\/small><\/li>\n  <li><b>Hardware \u2014 decides the life of the details.<\/b> Slides, hinges, legs, connectors: the small parts that fail first. Branded fittings (Blum, Hettich and equivalents) run smooth for a decade; anonymous ones rust and loosen inside six months.<small>Trap: hardware never mentioned in the quote. Ours names the brand and alloy; every drawer and door is cycled at inspection.<\/small><\/li>\n  <li><b>After-sales \u2014 decides whether you can sleep.<\/b> A confident factory gives a written warranty: frame 10 years, foam 5, cover 3. One that will not either doubts its product or plans a one-off sale.<small>Trap: &#8220;lifetime service&#8221; with no clause and no return-freight term. Our supplier agreements carry warranty, mismatch, delay and environmental clauses as standard \u2014 see <a href=\"\/nl\/blog\/foshan-furniture-buying-traps\/\">the eight traps and the four contract lines<\/a>.<\/small><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buying furniture is not buying a picture; it is buying materials, workmanship and after-sales. Pass all five and a cheap piece is a good piece. For an overseas buyer there is a step between checking and paying: writing. A pro-forma invoice that names species, density, hide grade, hardware brand and warranty is the only version of the five indicators you can enforce when the container opens in another country. Anything that stays verbal in Foshan stays in Foshan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sf-map\">\n  <div><span><b>The trap here<\/b>&#8220;Don&#8217;t worry, top grade&#8221; \u2014 and a chat log in Chinese as your only record<\/span><i>\u2192<\/i><span><b>Source Foshan control<\/b>Our quotation template has a fixed set of lines per item: dimensions, frame, foam, cover, hardware, finish, packing, warranty, plus freight and duty for the order. Each reads a value or &#8220;not included&#8221;. Payment: 30% to the licensed company, 70% after inspection \u2014 the full sequence is in <a href=\"\/nl\/buy-furniture-from-china\/#steps\">the ten steps<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step-5\">Step 5 \u00b7 &#8220;Factory direct&#8221; has its own traps \u2014 do not be fooled by &#8220;source price&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By now you may be thinking: then I will just buy from a Foshan factory. Good \u2014 but the water is deep here too. Not everything called &#8220;factory direct&#8221; is a factory, and the wholesaler who wrote the original guide lists the four ways insiders have been caught. From overseas each is worse, because you cannot drive back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sf-traps\">\n  <article class=\"sf-trap\">\n    <span class=\"sf-trap__num\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><svg viewbox=\"0 0 56 56\" fill=\"none\" stroke=\"currentColor\" stroke-width=\"2.2\" stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\"><path d=\"M6 46V22l22-12 22 12v24\"\/><path d=\"M6 46h44\"\/><path d=\"M20 46V32h16v14\"\/><path d=\"M40 10l8 8M48 10l-8 8\"\/><\/svg><\/span>\n    <h3>Trap 1 \u00b7 A middleman posing as the factory<\/h3>\n    <p class=\"sf-trap__said\">Countless accounts fly the &#8220;Foshan factory direct&#8221; flag with no workshop of their own; they take the order and subcontract it to a small plant, pocketing the difference and losing control of the spec.<\/p>\n    <div class=\"sf-trap__cols\">\n      <div><b>The check<\/b>Ask for a video of the workshop, the production line and the warehouse this week. A real factory does not mind; a fake one has excuses.<\/div>\n      <div><b>From overseas<\/b>The video may be genuine \u2014 of someone else&#8217;s floor. Ask whose name is on the licence and whose account gets the deposit.<\/div>\n      <div class=\"is-us\"><b>Source Foshan control<\/b>We visit before shortlisting, match licence to address to invoice, and photograph <em>your<\/em> frames at the frame stage. Outsiders cannot tell; by the time they can, they have been blocked.<\/p>\n    <div class=\"sf-trap__cols\">\n      <div><b>The check<\/b>A price that cannot cover the materials on the spec is not a discount \u2014 it is a different spec. Add it up and the mall was cheaper.<\/p>\n    <div class=\"sf-trap__cols\">\n      <div><b>The check<\/b>Before ordering: does the price include freight, carry-up and assembly? Any hidden fees?<\/div>\n      <div><b>From overseas<\/b>Replace &#8220;stairs&#8221; with export packing, ocean freight, insurance, destination handling, duty, last mile and assembly at your end.
