His account is the most useful piece of Foshan buying advice we have read this year.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>The regulators agree. In November 2025 the Foshan Furniture Association publicly asked consumers for evidence against bad actors; in August 2026 Lecong&#8217;s market supervision bureau fined a livestream seller \u00a560,000 for selling &#8220;top-grain leather&#8221; sofas made partly of PU; the city issued a compliance handbook for furniture livestreaming.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Two routes onto the &#8220;pirate ship&#8221;: buying online through influencers (material substitution, influencer-set prices, ad spend baked in) and flying in to shop the big malls (dealer showrooms with some of the highest rents in China, and no time to negotiate).<\/li>\n\n\n<li>A real full-grain leather sofa can cost \u00a52,000\u20133,000 from a low-overhead seller and be fake at \u00a53,000+ in a high-rent mall. Judge where the seller&#8217;s money goes, not the sticker price.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>The six checks: look at the back of the hide, smell the glue, do the cost arithmetic, ask &#8220;factory or channel?&#8221;, get the material in writing, and keep evidence \u2014 an unboxing video and a \u00a5200\u2013300 lab test.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Foshan&#8221; on the label is not a reason to order.<\/strong> The city makes some of the best-value furniture in the world, and its name is the most borrowed word in the Chinese furniture trade. The account below was written in September 2026 by a furniture dealer from Lanzhou, 2,000 km away, after three days in Foshan&#8217;s most famous mall and its livestream showrooms. We have translated and condensed it, checked the enforcement facts it cites, and added what it means for a buyer who is not 2,000 km away but 8,000. Source Foshan is a sourcing agent based in Foshan, China; we buy in these malls every week, and this is what we check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sf-source-note\">Source: &#8220;\u5728\u4f5b\u5c71\u770b\u4e86\u4e09\u5929\u5bb6\u5177\uff0c\u6211\u529d\u4f60\u522b\u51b2\u7740&#8217;\u4f5b\u5c71&#8217;\u4fe9\u5b57\u4e0b\u5355&#8221;, a WeChat article by a furniture retailer based in Lanzhou, September 2026. Translated and condensed by Source Foshan; enforcement figures as reported in the original. The author sells Foshan-made furniture in Lanzhou and says so. Prices in RMB with approximate USD at \u00a57.1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"good-soup\">First, the fair statement: Foshan furniture is good furniture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The author is careful about this and so are we. Most furniture that leaves Foshan is well made, which is why buyers fly in all year and why we built a company here. The industry is real: an estimated 30,000 related firms, the world&#8217;s largest furniture trading district in Lecong, more than a thousand upholstery factories in Longjiang. &#8220;A good pot of soup,&#8221; he writes, &#8220;that has fed a few rats.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What makes his piece unusual is that the rats have a paper trail. The numbers below are from Foshan&#8217;s own regulators, as cited in the article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sf-post-stats\">\n  <div><b>Nov 2025<\/b><span>Foshan Furniture Association issues a public statement against firms &#8220;eating from Foshan&#8217;s bowl while smashing it&#8221; and asks consumers for evidence<\/span><small>Cases referred to market supervision<\/small><\/div>\n  <div><b><em>\u00a560,000<\/em><\/b><span>Fine on a Lecong livestream seller (Aug 2026): &#8220;top-grain cowhide&#8221; sofas made partly of PU; &#8220;13 cm high-resilience foam&#8221; mixed with ordinary foam<\/span><small>\u2248 US$8,500<\/small><\/div>\n  <div><b>8 \/ \u00a5500k<\/b><span>Cases opened by Lecong market supervision this year; six closed; total penalties about \u00a5500,000<\/span><small>\u2248 \u00a580,000 per case<\/small><\/div>\n  <div><b>2026<\/b><span>Foshan city publishes a compliance handbook specifically for furniture livestream selling<\/span><small>A rulebook for one sales channel<\/small><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His arithmetic on the fine is the point: a fake-leather sofa sells for several thousand yuan, a livestream moves tens or hundreds of units a day, and the penalty when caught is \u00a560,000. &#8220;Everyone can do that sum.&#8221; A trade association reduced to crowdsourcing evidence against its own members is not a sign that the problem is rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"two-ships\">The two ways onto the pirate ship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sf-traps\">\n  <article class=\"sf-trap\">\n    <span class=\"sf-trap__num\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><svg viewbox=\"0 0 56 56\" fill=\"none\" stroke=\"currentColor\" stroke-width=\"2.2\" stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\"><rect x=\"8\" y=\"6\" width=\"24\" height=\"44\" rx=\"4\"\/><path d=\"M14 14h12M20 44h0\"\/><circle cx=\"20\" cy=\"44\" r=\"1.5\"\/><path d=\"M36 20l12-6v28l-12-6z\"\/><\/svg><\/span>\n    <h3>Route 1 \u00b7 Buying online, following an influencer<\/h3>\n    <p class=\"sf-trap__said\"><b>The material game.<\/b> &#8220;Genuine leather&#8221; that is actually PU. &#8220;Eco leather&#8221; (\u751f\u6001\u76ae) \u2014 shredded leather offcuts bonded with glue, often under 20% leather content, peeling within a year or two. And a testing loophole: above 50% leather content a material can be classified as &#8220;leather-type&#8221;, so the claim is not entirely false. The swatch they post you shows the face of the hide; the back, where bonded leather gives itself away, arrives with the sofa.<\/p>\n    <p class=\"sf-trap__said\"><b>The price game.<\/b> &#8220;Free flights and hotel, come to our factory showroom, factory prices.&#8221; The host is not a factory; the host can take you to a dozen factories, and the host sets the price (<a href=\"\/fr\/blog\/who-sells-foshan-furniture-online\/\">how the buyer business actually earns<\/a>). Factory owners the author spoke to called some influencer prices &#8220;unbelievable&#8221;. And the flow of money: lavish showrooms, high rents, daily ad spend to keep a following that, for a durable good, never buys twice. That cost is in the sofa.<\/p>\n    <div class=\"sf-trap__cols\">\n      <div><b>From overseas<\/b>The same mechanics work in English on Instagram, TikTok and Alibaba: the video is of someone else&#8217;s floor, the &#8220;factory price&#8221; includes the presenter&#8217;s margin, and the leather sample proves nothing about the back of the hide.<\/div>\n      <div class=\"is-us\"><b>How we close it<\/b>We do not take supplier commission, so no presenter sits between you and the factory price. Material grade, thickness and coverage are written in both languages; the back of the hide is photographed at inspection.<\/div>\n      <div class=\"is-number\"><b>The tell<\/b><strong>&lt; 20%<\/strong>leather content in low-grade &#8220;eco leather&#8221;<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/article>\n\n  <article class=\"sf-trap\">\n    <span class=\"sf-trap__num\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><svg viewbox=\"0 0 56 56\" fill=\"none\" stroke=\"currentColor\" stroke-width=\"2.2\" stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\"><path d=\"M6 46V16l11-8 11 8 11-8 11 8v30\"\/><path d=\"M6 46h44\"\/><path d=\"M14 46V30h8v16M34 46V30h8v16\"\/><path d=\"M24 22h8\"\/><\/svg><\/span>\n    <h3>Route 2 \u00b7 Flying in to shop the big malls<\/h3>\n    <p class=\"sf-trap__said\"><b>The rent.<\/b> He asked about ground-floor rents in the landmark mall (the <a href=\"\/fr\/foshan-guide\/\">Foshan market guide<\/a> covers which malls, and their hours): &#8220;among the highest in the country; I will not print the figure.&#8221; The neighbouring mall, floor by floor, was dealers rather than factories, with sticker prices at or above those in Lanzhou.<\/p>\n    <p class=\"sf-trap__said\"><b>The clock.<\/b> A visitor has one or two days. Nobody negotiates a factory price in an afternoon, and the seller knows you are leaving. &#8220;You flew to the source, and the price is higher than at home. You thought you cut out the middleman; you flew 2,000 km to feed a more expensive one.&#8221;<\/p>\n    <div class=\"sf-trap__cols\">\n      <div><b>From overseas<\/b>Multiply by four: a week in Foshan, a translator, and a container you cannot fill from one showroom. The malls are superb for seeing what exists. They are not, on their own, where the value is.<\/div>\n      <div class=\"is-us\"><b>How we close it<\/b>Our overhead is an office in Chancheng, not a mall floor, and our fee is stated. The same full-grain cowhide sofa cannot be sold for \u00a53,000-odd (\u2248US$450) from a floor with nationally rare rent, a lavish fit-out and daily ad buying \u2014 the hide alone costs more than that. So at that price in that place, something in the sofa is not what it says. The comparison is about overhead, not about a particular seller.<\/td><\/tr><\/tfoot>\n  <\/table>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For an overseas buyer the same logic scales: an agent whose costs are an office and whose income is a disclosed fee will usually land you a better sofa than a mall floor whose costs are rent and advertising \u2014 even after the fee. The comparison to make is the complete landed price against the written spec, not the sticker against the word &#8220;Foshan&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"six-checks\">The six checks, and what we add for export orders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"sf-checks\">\n  <li><b>Look at the back.<\/b> Top-grain cowhide has a natural suede-like flesh side; PU and bonded leathers have a fabric backing. Lift a seat cushion or look behind the back panel when the goods arrive.<small>Export addition: we photograph the hide back at the factory, before packing, so you are not the first person to look.<\/small><\/li>\n  <li><b>Smell it.<\/b> A strong glue smell points to bonded leather or poor adhesives.<small>Export addition: foam and adhesive off-gassing is also a container problem; we specify low-VOC glues on request.<\/small><\/li>\n  <li><b>Do the arithmetic.<\/b> If the price cannot cover the material and the seller&#8217;s visible overhead, the material is not what it says.<small>Export addition: run it on the landed price, including freight, duty and our fee.<\/small><\/li>\n  <li><b>Ask &#8220;factory or channel?&#8221;<\/b> (<a href=\"\/fr\/blog\/inside-a-foshan-furniture-factory\/\">what a real factory floor looks like, zone by zone<\/a>.) Free flights and hotels are paid for by someone. In a showroom, ask &#8220;\u5de5\u5382\u76f4\u8425\u8fd8\u662f\u7ecf\u9500?&#8221; and watch how the answer comes.<small>Export addition: we state maker or dealer on every shortlist, and check the licence behind the name.<\/small><\/li>\n  <li><b>Get it in black and white.<\/b> &#8220;Top-grain cowhide&#8221; on the order, and whether it means contact surfaces or all surfaces; have customer service confirm the material in the chat log.
