CSIL, the Milan-based industry research centre, puts Chinese furniture output at close to USD 160 billion in 2023, about 34% of world production, and China’s share of world furniture exports at over 30%. For scale, CSIL estimates global furniture production at around USD 471 billion and international furniture trade at about USD 174 billion in 2024. The next largest exporters are Vietnam, Poland, Italy and Germany, each well behind China.

Exports have been flat to slightly down since the 2021 peak. In the first three quarters of 2025 China exported USD 50.2 billion of furniture, 4.6% lower than the year before and roughly level with 2023, according to the China National Furniture Association. US tariffs and the relocation of some lines to Vietnam explain most of the softness. The industry has responded by consolidating: weaker factories have closed, while stronger ones have invested in automation and own-brand showrooms.

The product range is wider than most buyers expect. It runs from a USD 40 KD dining chair to a complete five-star hotel FF&E package, and covers upholstery and motion sofas, panel and solid-wood casegoods, office and dining seating, beds and mattresses, kitchen and wardrobe cabinetry, outdoor sets, lighting and decor. The domestic market is also larger than the export market: CSIL values Chinese furniture consumption at around USD 101 billion in 2025. That matters to an overseas buyer because it means thousands of domestic-brand showrooms hold finished stock you can inspect and buy in small quantities, which pure export factories do not offer.

Made in China is not one quality tier The same Foshan town produces USD 300 sofas and USD 3,000 sofas. The difference is frame timber, foam density, fabric abrasion rating, hardware and inspection, not the country of origin. Specify those variables and you control the quality tier you receive.

Where is furniture made in China?

Around two-thirds of export-grade furniture comes from a few dozen specialised towns, and the largest concentration by far is Guangdong province. Industry estimates cited by Economic Daily and reported by UPI in May 2026 put Foshan alone at about 35% of China’s furniture production, with roughly 30,000 related companies. Within Foshan, Shunde district’s Lecong town runs the world’s largest furniture trading district (more than 4 million m² of malls, over 10,000 dealers and about RMB 80 billion of annual transactions, per Guangdong’s official GDToday), while neighbouring Longjiang holds more than 1,200 sofa and upholstery factories. Dongguan, an hour east, hosts the high-end export OEM factories of Houjie and Dalingshan. The district-by-district detail is in the Foshan furniture markets and districts guide.

Other provinces specialise by product rather than by breadth. The table below lists the clusters an overseas buyer is most likely to meet, with the statistics that CIFF, the country’s main furniture fair organiser, publishes for each.

Cluster

Province

Specialty

Why it matters to buyers

Foshan (Shunde: Lecong, Longjiang; Nanhai; Chancheng)

Guangdong

Upholstery, dining, beds, hotel FF&E, panel and solid wood, tiles and sanitaryware

Largest showroom district in the world; est. 35% of China’s output; 5,000+ wood and panel enterprises in Shunde

Dongguan (Houjie, Dalingshan)

Guangdong

Export OEM/ODM for global brands, high-end casegoods, hospitality

Factories used to Western specs and audits; 3F fair twice a year

Huizhou

Guangdong

Motion and recliner sofas

A single plant exceeds 1.3 million sets a year; close to half of China’s motion sofa exports

Guangzhou

Guangdong

Whole-house customisation (kitchens, wardrobes)

Home to over half of China’s listed custom-cabinetry companies

Anji

Zhejiang

Office, gaming and swivel chairs

1,000+ enterprises, about 160 million chairs a year, over a third of China’s chair exports

Linhai (Taizhou)

Zhejiang

Outdoor furniture, cast aluminium, rattan

1,000+ outdoor firms with exports above RMB 20 billion a year

Haining / Jiaxing

Zhejiang

Upholstery components and sofas

1,000+ large supporting suppliers; strong for fabric sofas

Nantong

Jiangsu

Mattresses, memory foam

Capacity above 10 million mattresses a year

Qingdao

Shandong

Solid-wood dining and bedroom furniture for export

China’s largest solid-wood export base, over 50,000 containers a year

Nankang (Ganzhou)

Jiangxi

Solid wood and budget bedroom sets

Largest solid-wood base by volume, mostly domestic and e-commerce

Xianghe

Hebei

Panel, solid wood and upholstery for North China

Domestic-facing malls near Beijing and Tianjin port

Chengdu (Xindu)

Sichuan

Panel furniture and wardrobes

Serves inland China; 1,700 km from a seaport, rarely used for export

Anxi / Zhangzhou

Fujian

Rattan, iron and handicraft furniture

Traditional export base for garden and craft pieces

Main furniture clusters in China and what each is known for

Production space in a Guangdong furniture factory; cluster towns share foam, fabric, timber and hardware suppliers within an hour’s drive.

For most overseas orders the practical choice narrows to Guangdong. Foshan offers the widest range and year-round showrooms; Dongguan offers export factories with the deepest experience of Western specifications. Only a specialist requirement, such as 5,000 office chairs or a container of cast-aluminium garden sets, justifies adding Zhejiang to a sourcing trip.

Who actually sells Chinese furniture?

Four kinds of supplier sell furniture to overseas buyers, and the name on the business card does not always match what the company does. A factory owns production and sells at the lowest unit price but needs volume. A trading company owns nothing and sells access, convenience and mixed orders at a margin of typically 10–30%. A showroom brand is a domestic manufacturer that displays finished goods in a Lecong or Longjiang mall and sells from stock or short runs at a published “project price”. An independent sourcing team works for the buyer, not the seller, for a stated fee, and combines the other three.

Supplier type

Owns production?

Typical price level

Typical MOQ

Best for

Watch out for

Export factory (OEM/ODM)

Yes

Lowest, EXW or FOB

20–100 pcs per model; 1 container preferred

Retailers, importers, large projects

Slow on small orders; English and design support vary

Trading company

No

Factory + 10–30%

Low; will mix items

Mixed containers, buyers without local staff

Often presents itself as a factory; limited control over production

Showroom brand (domestic)

Yes, usually

Retail list minus 20–50% for trade or project buyers

None for stock; 5–20 pcs for colour changes

Homeowners, designers, boutique hotels

Export packing and paperwork are not their routine

Independent sourcing team

No

Supplier price + stated service fee

Follows the supplier’s MOQ

Whole-home and multi-supplier projects, first-time importers

Check the fee is disclosed and payments go to company accounts

The four supplier types compared

The confusion between factories and trading companies is the single most common misunderstanding. Verification is straightforward if you know what to ask for; the guide to finding and verifying China furniture manufacturers covers licence checks, audit visits and red flags. For showroom brands, a directory of physical venues such as the Foshan showroom directory tells you what you can see and sit on before you commit.

How does pricing work from the factory to your door?

The factory price is usually 55–80% of what you finally pay, and the rest is packing, freight, duty and delivery. Chinese suppliers quote EXW (ex-works, at the factory gate) or FOB (delivered to the port, export cleared). Everything after that point is your cost, or your forwarder’s. The worked example below uses a small mixed residential order and indicative 2026 rates; every line depends on route, season and volume, so treat it as a structure, not a quote.

Cost line

Indicative amount (USD)

Share of EXW

Notes

Product, EXW Foshan

10,000

100%

Sofa, dining set, two beds, side tables

Export packing and crating

300–600

3–6%

Foam, corner protection, crates for stone and glass

Inland trucking to Shenzhen or Nansha port

100–250

1–2.5%

Foshan is 1–2 hours from both ports

Ocean freight, LCL

750–1,500

7.5–15%

USD 50–100 per m³ indicative; FCL is cheaper per m³

Marine insurance

30–50

0.3–0.5%

Usually 110% of CIF value

Destination port and handling

300–800

3–8%

LCL deconsolidation, documentation, terminal fees

Import duty and taxes

Varies by country

0–40%+

US: Section 301 adds 25% on most Chinese furniture, plus other layers; EU, UK, AU apply duty plus VAT or GST

Last-mile delivery

200–800

2–8%

Kerbside versus in-room delivery

Landed total, before duty

11,700–14,000

117–140%

EXW is 71–85% of landed before duty

Worked example: landed cost structure for a USD 10,000 EXW mixed order, about 15 m³ shipped LCL

Two things move this structure most. Volume: a full 40 ft HQ container (about 76 m³ / 2,690 cu ft) can cut ocean freight per m³ by half compared with LCL, which is why importers consolidate several suppliers into one box. Duty: US importers currently face Section 301 tariffs of 25% on most Chinese-origin furniture on top of the base rate, and additional tariff layers have changed several times since 2025; European, UK and Australian rates are far lower but VAT or GST applies on the landed value. The full step-by-step process, payment safeguards and Incoterms are in how to buy furniture from China. Classification and the 6-digit codes that determine duty are explained in the furniture HS code guide. If you are buying for resale, the price tiers between factory, wholesaler and showroom are set out in the China furniture wholesale guide.

What MOQ and customisation can you realistically expect?

Expect a factory minimum of 20–50 units per model and colour, and expect almost anything to be customisable within that minimum. Chinese furniture factories are built around made-to-order production, so changing dimensions, fabric, leg finish or stone top is routine and usually free of tooling charges. What costs money is a low quantity: a factory that quotes USD 180 for a dining chair at 100 pieces may quote USD 260 at 10 pieces or decline the order.

There are four practical ways to get below a factory MOQ:

Buy from showroom stock, which has no minimum and is often ex-display or from the brand’s warehouse.

Standardise: order 30 chairs in one fabric across three restaurants rather than 10 in each of three fabrics.

Combine with another buyer’s run of the same model, which a trading company or local sourcing team can arrange.

Accept a small-quantity surcharge, typically 15–40%, which is still well below Western retail for the same specification.

Fully custom pieces follow a defined path: reference image, dimensioned shop drawing, material and sample approval, first-article approval, batch production, inspection. Indicative lead times used by Foshan workshops are 4–6 weeks for simple pieces, 6–8 weeks for upholstery and stone, and 8–10 weeks for full cabinetry. Custom furniture from China typically lands 30–60% below comparable Western retail for the same materials, a range that depends heavily on shipping volume and destination duty. The custom furniture development page shows the drawing-to-approval process in detail.

Samples are worth the money A sample chair costs USD 100–400 including courier and takes 2–3 weeks. A structured guided Foshan buying visit compresses what would take a week alone into two or three days by pre-booking showrooms and factories along one route. Fairs are strongest for volume and export-factory discovery; the dates, venues and how to combine a fair with a Foshan day are in the China furniture fairs guide. Skip any one and the outcome becomes a matter of luck. A workable specification names the frame material (kiln-dried hardwood, plywood grade, steel gauge), foam density in kg/m³, fabric abrasion rating, veneer or laminate grade, hardware brand and finish, and packaging method. Factories build to what is written, not to what was implied.

Inspection should be staged rather than a single final check. A good plan covers material selection, incoming materials, production monitoring, assembly, final quality, packaging and shipment approval, with photos and video of every item before the balance is released. Independent inspection of a container load costs roughly USD 300–500 a day in Guangdong. How a full pre-shipment photo and video report works, and what export packing to a written standard looks like, is set out on the quality control and shipping page.

Compliance depends on destination and product. Commonly relevant rules include US formaldehyde limits for composite wood under TSCA Title VI (with CARB in California), upholstery smoulder and flammability standards such as California TB 117-2013 and the UK Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988, and ISPM-15 heat-treatment marks on solid-wood pallets and crates. Hospitality and office projects add contract-grade testing standards. Ask the supplier which tests they have passed and request the certificates, then confirm the requirements with your local authority or customs broker; suppliers can produce to a standard, but responsibility for compliance rests with the importer.

How Source Foshan helps you buy furniture from China

Source Foshan is a local sourcing team based in Foshan and working in Dongguan. It is not a manufacturer, a marketplace or a broker directory. The team searches and shortlists suppliers from a base of 300+ vetted showrooms, factories and specialist workshops across 10+ product categories, compares quotes with transparent, compared pricing and a stated service fee, places and confirms orders, tracks production with weekly photo updates, runs a 7-checkpoint quality process with a full pre-shipment photo and video report, packs to a written export standard, and consolidates several suppliers into one shipment. Homeowners can join a guided buying visit at USD 150 a day (guide only), USD 250 a day (guide, 5-seat car and driver) or USD 299 a day (luxury 7-seat SUV, 4–6 guests). Interior studios can source FF&E under their own brand with an options sheet per line item; details are on the page for designers and studios. To date the team has delivered 60+ projects to 18 countries and shipped 120+ containers, including a whole-home residence in the Greater Bay Area with 54 items from 9 suppliers in one container. Quality follows the specification you write, the supplier tier you choose and the inspection you insist on. Buyers who define frame timber, foam density, fabric abrasion and hardware, approve a first article and inspect before paying the balance get consistent results.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
How much cheaper is furniture from China than buying locally?

For custom or mid-to-high-end pieces, landed prices typically come in 30–60% below comparable Western retail for the same materials, depending on volume, route and destination duty. The saving shrinks on small LCL shipments and in the US, where Section 301 tariffs add 25% or more. For cheap flat-pack items the saving is often not worth the effort, because local retailers already import those at scale.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can a private homeowner buy directly from a Chinese factory?

Yes, but factories prefer volume, so a single home order usually mixes showroom stock, short factory runs and a few custom pieces from workshops. The efficient way is to fill one shipment from several suppliers, consolidated in one warehouse. A whole 3–4 bedroom home often fits a 40 ft HQ container; smaller orders ship LCL by the cubic metre. A local sourcing team handles the coordination that a factory will not do for one household.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
How long does it take from order to delivery?

Plan 3–5 months door to door. Production typically takes 30–60 days after deposit and drawing approval, longer for full cabinetry. Add 1–2 weeks for inspection, packing and consolidation, then 20–45 days of ocean transit depending on the route, and 1–2 weeks for customs clearance and last-mile delivery. Orders placed in December or early January lose 3–4 weeks to the Chinese New Year shutdown.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Do I need to speak Chinese or visit in person?

Neither is essential, but each helps. Export factories and larger showrooms have English-speaking sales staff; smaller workshops and most mall showrooms do not, and WeChat translation covers simple exchanges but not specification detail. Visiting is the highest-confidence route for a whole home or a hotel because you can sit on the sofa and see finish samples. Many buyers source remotely through a bilingual local team and visit once for sample approval.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
What are the biggest risks when buying furniture from China?

The main risks are paying a deposit to a company that is not who it claims to be, receiving goods that differ from the sample, and transit damage from weak packing. Each has a standard control: verify the business licence and pay only to the company bank account, approve a first article and inspect before the balance, and specify export packing in writing. Duty surprises are the fourth risk, avoided by confirming the tariff line with a broker first.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Which Chinese furniture fair should a first-time buyer attend?

CIFF Guangzhou in March is the broadest single event: home furniture in the first phase and office and contract in the second, held in Guangzhou 40–60 minutes from Foshan. Hospitality and contract buyers should add the Dongguan 3F fair or a Foshan showroom day for hotel furniture suppliers. Volume importers of mixed home goods often prefer the Canton Fair’s second phase in April or October.

</details>

Sources and further reading

CIFF Guangzhou — The furniture competitive landscape: China’s pivotal role (CSIL data) — China output ~USD 160 bn and 34% of world production in 2023; over 30% of global exports

CSIL — An Intense Year for the Furniture Industry — World production ~USD 471 bn and trade ~USD 174 bn in 2024; exporter ranking

CIFF Guangzhou — Domestic demand seeks renewal, exports face transformation (CNFA data) — China furniture exports USD 50.177 bn in Jan–Sep 2025, down 4.6%

UPI — China’s furniture hub Foshan faces deepening economic crisis (11 May 2026) — Foshan est. 35% of China’s furniture production; ~30,000 related companies

CIFF Click2Connect — A Strategic Guide to Sourcing Furniture in China (2026): Key Clusters — Cluster statistics for Anji, Huizhou, Linhai, Nantong, Qingdao, Shunde, Guangzhou

Gateway Lines — Complete Guide to Section 301 China Tariffs in 2026 (updated 18 Sep 2026) — Section 301 List 3: 25% on furniture since September 2018; additional layers vary

China produces roughly a third of the world’s furniture and supplies over 30% of global furniture exports, worth in the region of USD 65 billion a year.
