We have translated the numbers, checked them against what we see on our own orders, and added the part that matters to a buyer outside China: how to tell which of the ten prices you are looking at. Source Foshan is a sourcing agent based in Foshan, China; the three prices below are ones we were quoted for the same model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sf-source-note\">Source: a price breakdown published in September 2026 by an interior-design firm based in Hangzhou that sources furniture from Foshan for its projects. USD at \u00a57.1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"three-prices\">One sofa, three prices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sofa is an ordinary one: three seats plus a chaise, fabric cover, the kind that sits in half the living rooms in the Pearl River Delta. Here is what it costs at three points on the same road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sf-post-stats\">\n  <div><b>\u00a54,500\u20139,000<\/b><span>Ex-factory, across Foshan&#8217;s factories \u2014 small workshop at the bottom, brand OEM plant at the top<\/span><small>\u2248 US$630\u20131,270 \u00b7 the &#8220;ten prices&#8221; band<\/small><\/div>\n  <div><b><em>\u00a56,800<\/em><\/b><span>Ex-factory from a well-run mid-size factory, mid-to-upper spec: branded 45D foam, upper-grade fabric, senior upholsterers<\/span><small>\u2248 US$960<\/small><\/div>\n  <div><b>\u00a512,800<\/b><span>The same piece, branded, on the floor of a mall showroom<\/span><small>\u2248 US$1,800<\/small><\/div>\n  <div><b>\u00a56,000<\/b><span>Mall price minus factory price \u2014 none of it is in the sofa<\/span><small>\u2248 US$845 \u00b7 47% of the ticket<\/small><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two gaps, two different explanations. The gap between the factory and the mall is about <em>where you buy<\/em>. The gap between one factory and another is about <em>what you are actually buying<\/em>. Most buying mistakes in Foshan come from treating the second gap as if it were the first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"factory-to-mall\">Where the \u00a56,000 between factory and mall goes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The firm&#8217;s own breakdown of the mall mark-up on this sofa. Everything you pay for here is in the piece.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"factory-to-factory\">Why one &#8220;same sofa&#8221; costs \u00a54,500 and another \u00a59,000<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Foshan has more than twenty thousand furniture workshops and factories. Ask ten of them for &#8220;a three-seat fabric sofa with chaise&#8221; and you will get ten prices spread across a factor of two. That is not random pricing; it is four things that differ underneath the same product name. The Hangzhou firm listed them from the inside; we see the same four on every inspection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"sf-points\">\n  <li><svg viewbox=\"0 0 48 48\" fill=\"none\" stroke=\"currentColor\" stroke-width=\"2.2\" stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M6 34V18h36v16\"\/><path d=\"M10 18v-6h28v6\"\/><path d=\"M8 34v6M40 34v6\"\/><path d=\"M14 26h8M26 26h8\" stroke-dasharray=\"2 2\"\/><\/svg><div><b>1 \u00b7 The pattern the frame is cut from<\/b><p>A cheap workshop buys a ready-made template and runs it. A serious factory buys the original piece, takes it apart repeatedly, settles its own pattern and tools up for it. In a good factory they are master craftsmen averaging \u00a512,000. The firm&#8217;s phrase: &#8220;this gate cannot be passed by a machine.&#8221; Wages are the second-largest line in a sofa.<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n  <li><svg viewbox=\"0 0 48 48\" fill=\"none\" stroke=\"currentColor\" stroke-width=\"2.2\" stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><path d=\"M6 40V20l10-6 10 6 10-6 10 6v20\"\/><path d=\"M6 40h40\"\/><path d=\"M14 40V30h6v10M28 40V30h6v10\"\/><\/svg><div><b>4 \u00b7 The building<\/b><p>Large factories sit in regulated industrial parks with managed floors, dust extraction and stock control. Small ones work out of run-down premises. The rent difference is real, and so is the difference in consistency and quality control \u2014 which is what you are paying for when you cannot inspect every piece yourself.<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Add the four together and you have the reason a &#8220;sofa&#8221; in Foshan comes in ten grades; <a href=\"\/de\/blog\/inside-a-foshan-furniture-factory\/\">walking the seven production zones<\/a> is how you see which grade a plant sits in. You are not buying a name; you are buying the sum of pattern, materials, hands and building. It is a good process. For a buyer in Sydney, Dubai or London, each step has an extra layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"sf-map\">\n  <div><span><b>Domestic step<\/b>Send a photo or link; find the same-source factory<\/span><i>\u2192<\/i><span><b>Overseas, with Source Foshan<\/b>Same \u2014 plus we tell you whether the factory is the maker or a dealer, and which of the ten grades the quote sits in. Our threshold for overseas buyers lands in the same place for the same reason \u2014 fixed costs: roughly <a href=\"\/de\/buy-furniture-from-china\/\">USD 8,000\u201310,000 ex-works or 15 m\u00b3<\/a> of goods. The same piece on a mall floor is about \u00a512,800. In USD, our published ex-works bands for fabric three-seaters are USD 600\u20131,500.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Why is the same sofa so much cheaper at the factory than in a Foshan mall?<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the mall price carries costs of selling, not making: roughly \u00a51,800 of rent and fit-out, \u00a51,200 of sales commission and operations, \u00a52,200 of brand premium and dealer margins and \u00a5800 of local logistics on a \u00a512,800 sofa. The \u00a56,800 factory price already includes materials, labour and a fair factory profit.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Why do different Foshan factories quote such different prices for the same sofa?<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four things differ under the same name: the pattern the frame is built from (bought template vs. an original taken apart and re-engineered), the grade of hide and foam behind identical labels, the wage bracket of the craftsmen (\u2248 \u00a56,000 vs \u00a512,000 a month) and the building (regulated industrial park vs. run-down premises). Together they explain a spread of roughly two to one.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>What does &#8220;45D foam&#8221; actually tell me?<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only the nominal density, about 45 kg\/m\u00b3. Two foams both stamped 45D can differ noticeably in price, resilience and lifespan depending on the manufacturer. Ask for the foam brand and origin as well as the density, and for a photo of the bare seat before the cover goes on.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Is it worth buying a sofa from Foshan if I live overseas?<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One sofa alone, rarely: LCL freight and fixed import charges absorb the saving. As part of an order of roughly USD 8,000\u201310,000 or 15 m\u00b3 \u2014 a living room and a bedroom upwards \u2014 yes, and the saving is largest on upholstery, solid wood, stone and cabinetry. The rule of thumb from both the Hangzhou firm and us: a large price gap, no rush, and a traceable source.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Does Source Foshan have its own factory?<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No, deliberately. We work for the buyer on a stated fee and take no supplier commission, so we can put several factories&#8217; quotes for the same piece side by side and explain which grade each represents, rather than steering you to one plant.
